I have been getting wind of this for some time but never in detail so just sat on it waiting for a more official notice.  Heritage Foundation doesn’t report on rumors so here it is Dear Readers just what we tax payers have grown to expect from our government.  At this time I can only refer you to a statement by Thomas Jefferson.  (And for you purest I also included the source of Jefferson’s quote :)  since the last time I used a quote I  got all kinds of comments refuting the source I had given).

AUTHOR: Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
QUOTATION: The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.

Now Congress Wants to Exempt Itself from Obamacare

April 25, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Newscom

No argument for Obamacare’s repeal can top the simple fact that Members of Congress do not want it to apply to them.

Today’s Politico reports that the House and Senate congressional leadership—both Democrats and Republicans working in cahoots with Obama Administration officials—have been secretly negotiating for months trying to find a way to exempt Members of Congress and their staffs from being forced into Obamacare’s health insurance exchanges.

Beginning on January 1, 2014, these exchanges, to be run by the federal government or the states (under federal rules) will offer federally “qualified” insurance coverage for millions of Americans. Ordinary Americans must either sign up or face a tax penalty. Senator Max Baucus (D–MT), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has now famously described the Obama’s Administration’s implementation of this process as an oncoming “train wreck,” and Henry Chao, an Administration official involved with the implementation of the law, just hopes that Americans can avoid a “third-world experience.”

According to the Politico story, there are two major reasons why Members of Congress want to exempt themselves and their staffs from the terms and conditions of the law:

  1. They fear higher health care costs. Congressional leaders fear that being forced into the Obamacare exchanges will result in higher health care costs for themselves and their families and their aides. “The problem stems from whether members and aides set to enter the exchanges would have their health insurance premiums subsidized by their employer—in this case the federal government.” This is also true for millions of ordinary Americans. They could also lose their employer-based coverage, and they could also face higher costs. Also contrary to the President’s promises, independent analystsexpect health insurance premiums to rise sharply, particularly for younger workers and their families.
  2. They fear the impact on Capitol Hill employment. “There is concern in some quarters that the provision requiring lawmakers and staffers to join the exchanges, if it isn’t revised, could lead to a ‘brain drain’ on Capitol Hill, as several sources close to the talks put it.” Given the insane spending and record deficits, it’s hard to imagine how a Capitol Hill “brain drain” could produce even worse government. But ordinary Americans who run businesses are also faced with anxieties, particularly whether they will be able to hire or retain valued employees or reduce full-time workers to part-time employees in order to avoid Obamacare’s mandatory costs.

For veteran Capitol Hill watchers, shenanigans behind closed doors to enable Congress and its staffers to escape Obamacare come as no surprise. After all, the national health care law was fashioned through repulsive backroom dealing (the “Cornhusker Kickback,” the “Louisiana Purchase,” etc.) that set a record for arrogance and contempt of popular opinion. Favored businesses and unions got special exemptions (more than 1,200 waivers) from Obamacare’s insurance rules. So consider today’s Politico revelation just marquee for a rerun of a tiresome old movie: one set of rules for Congress and another set of rules for the rest of us.

If Congress quietly wants to exempt itself from Obamacare, that’s great—so long as it includes the rest of us in that midnight amendment.

(Remember Dear Reader that Obama has already exempted the labor unions and other cronies so why not themselves?!!~  these people are beyond repulsive IMO.  The Tea Party is revving up for the 2014 election with the theme to throw them all out and get decent people in Congress.  Unfortunately we stuck with Obama regardless of how many laws he breaks or how many impeachable offenses he commits because there is no way the first American Black President will be impeached.  But we can damned well change Congress! and put more sane conservative people in who will uphold our constitutional rights and govern as our country should be governed.  This means first repealing Obamacare, then Dodd-Frank and that is just a start of what needs done in Washington.  Things a decent and sincere  Copngressman or woman will do.  Sincerely, BB)

Articles: Republican Delusion is Obama’s All-Too-Secret Weapon.

Republicans are known RIGHTLY! for being adept at snatching defeat from victory.  Why this is so often baffles many of us, but this article in American Thinker has some serious answers and perhaps can serve as a warning to those of us who react in the ways outlined in the article.  It seems the most important and potentially devastating Republican characteristic in self-defeat is overly optimistic and willing to believe verbal please of innocence even against all evidence of past negative actions.  In other words: STOP BEING MR. » House GOP’s Spending Record: So Far, So Good – Big Government.

Our newly elected Congressmen seem to have gotten the message from we the people and are busy finding and exposing a few of the huge pool of ineffective spending by our federal government.  The problem is the Old Dogs both Republican and Democrat.  It will be interesting to see which one wins this battle of wills.  the next month or two are important because  several spending bills, the budget and debate over whether or not to raise the debt ceiling are on the agenda.  If the new guys are to have a fighting chance they need your help: make those phone calls and send those emails.  (TIP:  Congressional staffers  reported that those blanket emailing where everyone uses the same wording have the least impact. So write your own email message.  It can be brief as: Do Not raise the Debt Ceiling., or   Do not bail out any cities or states with federal tax money.  In fact brief and to the point is better.   BB

House GOP’s Spending Record: So Far, So Good

by Robert Bluey

Republicans have controlled the House for little over a month, but so far the record is clear: The new GOP majority is living up to its promise to cut spending.

In the first four weeks of the 112th Congress, Republicans have passed legislation that cuts spending by $656 billion without a single spending increase.

The conservative Republican Study Committee’sMoney Monitor, (you might want to subscribe to this newsletter.  BB)  the only document tracking the cost of bills as they pass the House, has the data. It shows:

  • $541 billion in mandatory spending cuts.
  • $115 billion in authorized spending cuts (subject to appropriation).
  • $770 billion in tax cuts.

Those figures stand in stark contrast to the previous Congress, when the Democrat-controlled House enacted $682 billion of new spending in just the first four weeks.

Of course, Republicans face a high hurdle to enact many of their cuts with Democrats controlling the Senate and President Obama in the White House. But that hasn’t stopped them from trying.

The GOP’s cuts includerepeal of Obamacareand YouCut-related bills such as theStop the Over Printing Act and elimination of the presidential campaign fund.

Expect more next week when Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the RSC (Republican Study Committee),will offer several amendmentsto the fiscal 2011 continuing resolution. Conservatives maintain the GOP should cut a full $100 billion in non-security spending. The proposal released last weekby House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) includes $58 billion in discretionary spending, plus another $16 billion in security spending.

Since the Debt Ceiling debate is coming up very soon and the Old Dog Republicans, Democrats and Obama are all for raising the debt ceiling  the newbie Republicans in the House  are up against it here.  Passing this one bill would have taken care of the argument that the honor of the United States is at stake.  It is a simple law and perhaps that is the problem: it is too sane for our Congressmen to understand!

RSC Members Introduce Bill to Prevent a Default on the Debt

Washington, Jan 26 -

Led by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), and Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), RSC members have introduced H.R. 421, the Full Faith and Credit Act.  In the event the statutory debt ceiling is reached, this legislation would direct the United States Treasury to prevent a default by paying principal and interest due on debt held by the public before making any other payments.  The bill has also been introduced in the Senate by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA).

“The ‘full faith and credit’ of the United States should not hang in the balance on every adjustment to the national debt limit,” said Rep. McClintock.  “States protect their credit by pledging first call on revenues to their debts and so should the federal government.  After all, before you can ‘provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty,’ you have to be able to finance them.”

“A pitiful scare tactic already being used by the Treasury Secretary in the debt ceiling debate is the threat of allowing the federal government to default on its obligations,” said Chairman Jordan.  “This is government mismanagement at its worst.  Secretary Geithner knows full well that he has the authority to prioritize federal spending so that default is not an option.  This bill will take Secretary Geithner’s disastrous scenario completely off the table.”

“America’s sterling credit rating is vital to our future prosperity,” said Rep. Foxx.  “This bill offers a simple safeguard to protect our credit and prevent a sovereign debt crisis.  It’s the sort of common sense solution that we can easily put in place without wading into the debate over raising the debt ceiling.”

“This important piece of legislation ensures America’s debt rating and the threat of default on our debt cannot be used as political weapons.  This bill will remind the markets and the world that America will never default on its debt while giving Congress time to have a meaningful, reasonable discussion about how to rein in out-of-control spending and prevent our country from sliding further into debt,” remarked Rep. Garrett.

I listened to The One and Only Obama for all of 15 minutes.  I know it was 15 minutes because I set my rooster shaped timer to force myself to listen at least 15 minutes.  And it did force me because I was ready to shut off the WTF  stuff (I won’t use foul language because I still remember my Mom’s soap from when I was five and copied my cousin) but I can darn well think it and that is exactly what I thought of this moron’s State of the Union Address. It was so bad that I KNOW it gave me the flu because I have been sick since!

Even tho I was feeling queezy from an overdose of Obama I still  made it a point to  listen to Rep. Paul Ryan and Rep. Michelle Bachmann.  Thank God we have people in congress like these two.  Please God allow there to be enough of them to save us.

Here is the video and written words of Rep. Paul Ryan.   I give you both because if you are like me you get more from the written word even after hearing the dialog.  :)     If you don’t care to listen to or read Ryan please page down and read again what Michelle Bachmann said. It’s important that we understand where we are today and where the Republicans we elected in November need to try to take us tomorrow.BB

Rep. Paul Ryan: ‘Our nation is approaching a tipping point’

January 25, 2011 |  5:36 pm

Wisconsin Republican representative Paul Ryan

Response to the State of the Union by Rep. Paul Ryan, as provided by Republican Party leadership

Good evening. I’m Congressman Paul Ryan from Janesville, Wisconsin – and Chairman here at the House Budget Committee.

President Obama just addressed a Congressional chamber filled with many new faces. One face we did not see tonight was that of our friend and colleague, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. We all miss Gabby and her cheerful spirit; and we are praying for her return to the House Chamber.

Earlier this month, President Obama spoke movingly at a memorial event for the six people who died on that violent morning in Tucson. Still, there are no words that can lift the sorrow that now engulfs the families and friends of the fallen.

What we can do is assure them that the nation is praying for them; that, in the words of the Psalmist, the Lord heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds; and that over time grace will replace grief.

As Gabby continues to make encouraging progress, we must….

…keep her and the others in our thoughts as we attend to the work now before us. Tonight, the President focused a lot of attention on our economy in general – and on our deficit and debt in particular.

He was right to do so, and some of his words were reassuring. As Chairman of the House Budget Committee, I assure you that we want to work with the President to restrain federal spending.

In one of our first acts in the new majority, House Republicans voted to cut Congress’s own budget. And just today, the House voted to restore the spending discipline that Washington sorely needs.

The reason is simple.

A few years ago, reducing spending was important. Today, it’s imperative. Here’s why.

We face a crushing burden of debt. The debt will soon eclipse our entire economy, and grow to catastrophic levels in the years ahead.

On this current path, when my three children – who are now 6, 7, and 8 years old – are raising their own children, the Federal government will double in size, and so will the taxes they pay.

No economy can sustain such high levels of debt and taxation. The next generation will inherit a stagnant economy and a diminished country.

Frankly, it’s one of my greatest concerns as a parent – and I know many of you feel the same way.

Our debt is the product of acts by many presidents and many Congresses over many years. No one person or party is responsible for it.

There is no doubt the President came into office facing a severe fiscal and economic situation.

Unfortunately, instead of restoring the fundamentals of economic…….. growth, he engaged in a stimulus spending spree that not only failed to deliver on its promise to create jobs, but also plunged us even deeper into debt.

The facts are clear: Since taking office, President Obama has signed into law spending increases of nearly 25% for domestic government agencies – an 84% increase when you include the failed stimulus.

All of this new government spending was sold as “investment.”  Yet after two years, the unemployment rate remains above 9% and government has added over $3 trillion to our debt.

Then the President and his party made matters even worse, by creating a new open-ended health care entitlement.

What we already know about the President’s health care law is this: Costs are going up, premiums are rising, and millions of people will lose the coverage they currently have. Job creation is being stifled by all of its taxes, penalties, mandates and fees.

Businesses and unions from around the country are asking the Obama Administration for waivers from the mandates.  Washington should not be in the business of picking winners and losers.  The President mentioned the need for regulatory reform to ease the burden on American businesses. We agree – and we think his health care law would be a great place to start.

Last week, House Republicans voted for a full repeal of this law, as we pledged to do, and we will work to replace it with fiscally responsible, patient-centered reforms that actually reduce costs and expand coverage.

Health care spending is driving the explosive growth of our debt.  And the President’s law is accelerating our country toward bankruptcy.

Our debt is out of control.  What was a fiscal challenge is now a fiscal crisis.

We cannot deny it; instead we must, as Americans, confront it responsibly.

And that is exactly what Republicans pledge to do.

Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified – especially when it comes to spending.  So hold all of us accountable.

In this very room, the House will produce, debate, and advance a budget. Last year – in an unprecedented failure– Congress chose not to pass, or even propose a budget. The spending spree continued unchecked.

We owe you a better choice and a different vision.

Our forthcoming budget is our obligation to you – to show you how we intend to do things differently … how we will cut spending to get the debt down… help create jobs and prosperity … and reform government programs. If we act soon, and if we act responsibly, people in and near retirement will be protected.

These budget debates are not just about the programs of government; they’re also about the purpose of government.

So I’d like to share with you the principles that guide us.  They are anchored in the wisdom of the founders; in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence; and in the words of the American Constitution.

They have to do with the importance of limited government; and with the blessing of self-government.

We believe government’s role is both vital and limited – to defend the nation from attack and provide for the common defense …  to secure our borders… to protect innocent life… to uphold our laws and Constitutional rights … to ensure domestic tranquility and equal opportunity … and to help provide a safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves.

We believe that the government has an important role to create the conditions that promote entrepreneurship, upward mobility, and individual responsibility.

We believe, as our founders did, that “the pursuit of happiness” depends upon individual liberty; and individual liberty requires limited government.

Limited government also means effective government. When government takes on too many tasks, it usually doesn’t do any of them very well.  It’s no coincidence that trust in government is at an all-time low now that the size of government is at an all-time high.

The President and the Democratic Leadership have shown, by their actions, that they believe government needs to increase its size and its reach, its price tag and its power.

Whether sold as “stimulus” or repackaged as “investment,” their actions show they want a federal government that controls too much; taxes too much; and spends too much in order to do too much.

And during the last two years, that is exactly what we have gotten – along with record deficits and debt – to the point where the President is now urging Congress to increase the debt limit.

We believe the days of business as usual must come to an end.  We hold to a couple of simple convictions: Endless borrowing is not a strategy; spending cuts have to come first.

Our nation is approaching a tipping point.

We are at a moment, where if government’s growth is left unchecked and unchallenged, America’s best century will be considered our past century. This is a future in which we will transform our social safety net into a hammock, which lulls able-bodied people into lives of complacency and dependency.

Depending on bureaucracy to foster innovation, competitiveness, and wise consumer choices has never worked – and it won’t work now.

We need to chart a new course.

Speaking candidly, as one citizen to another:  We still have time… but not much time.  If we continue down our current path, we know what our future will be.

Just take a look at what’s happening to Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom and other nations in Europe. They didn’t act soon enough; and now their governments have been forced to impose painful austerity measures: large benefit cuts to seniors and huge tax increases on everybody.

Their day of reckoning has arrived. Ours is around the corner.  That is why we must act now.

Some people will back away from this challenge.  But I see this challenge as an opportunity to rebuild what Lincoln called the “central ideas” of the Republic.

We believe a renewed commitment to limited government will unshackle our economy and create millions of new jobs and opportunities for all people, of every background, to succeed and prosper.  Under this approach, the spirit of initiative – not political clout – determines who succeeds.

Millions of families have fallen on hard times not because of our ideals of free enterprise – but because our leaders failed to live up to those ideals; because of poor decisions made in Washington and Wall Street that caused a financial crisis, squandered our savings, broke our trust, and crippled our economy.

Today, a similar kind of irresponsibility threatens not only our livelihoods but our way of life.
¬¬
We need to reclaim our American system of limited government, low taxes, reasonable regulations, and sound money, which has blessed us with unprecedented prosperity.  And it has done more to help the poor than any other economic system ever designed.  That’s the real secret to job creation – not borrowing and spending more money in Washington.

Limited government and free enterprise have helped make America the greatest nation on earth.

These are not easy times, but America is an exceptional nation.  In all the chapters of human history, there has never been anything quite like America.  The American story has been cherished, advanced, and defended over the centuries.

And it now falls to this generation to pass on to our children a nation that is stronger, more vibrant, more decent, and better than the one we inherited.

Thank you and good night.    ####

Rep. Michele Bachmann of the Tea Party: ‘We bought a bureaucracy that tells us which lightbulbs to buy’

January 25, 2011 |  9:12 pm

Republican representatives Michele Bachmann and Speaker John Boehner 1/11

Remarks by Rep. Michele Bachmann following the State of the Union, as provided by the Tea Party Express

Good evening, my name is Congresswoman Michele Bachmann from Minnesota’s 6th District.

Two years ago, when Barack Obama became our President, unemployment was 7.8 percent and our national debt stood at what seemed like a staggering $10.6 trillion dollars.

We wondered whether the President would cut spending, reduce the deficit and implement real job-creating policies.

Unfortunately, the President’s strategy for recovery was to spend a trillion dollars on a failed stimulus program, fueled by borrowed money.

The White House promised us that all the spending would keep unemployment under 8 percent.

Not only did that plan fail to deliver, but within three months the national jobless rate spiked to 9.4 percent. And sadly, it hasn’t been lower for 20 straight months. While the government grew, we lost more than 2 million jobs.

Let me show you a chart.

Here are unemployment rates over the past ten years. In October 2001, our….

…national unemployment rate was at 5.3 percent. In 2008 it was at 6.6 percent. But, just eight months after President Obama promised lower unemployment, that rate spiked to a staggering 10.1 percent.

Today, unemployment is at 9.4 percent with about 400,000 new claims every week.

After the $700 billion bailout, the trillion-dollar stimulus, and the $410 billion spending bill with over 9,000 earmarks, many of you implored Washington to please stop spending money we don’t have.

But, instead of cutting, we saw an unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt, unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country.

Deficits were unacceptably high under President Bush, but they exploded under President Obama’s direction, growing the national debt by an astounding $3.1 trillion-dollars.

What did we buy?

Instead of a leaner, smarter government, we bought a bureaucracy that tells us which light bulbs to buy, and which will put 16,500 IRS agents in charge of policing President Obama’s healthcare bill.

Minnesota Republican representative Michele Bachmann ObamaCare mandates and penalties will force many job creators to stop offering health insurance altogether, unless yours is one of the more-than-222 privileged companies or unions that has received a government waiver. (That is a waiver FROM USING AND FOLLOWING Obamacare dictates!    The Congress and President and  all the lucky union members can keep what they have and are exempt from Obamacare.  but We the People who pay the taxes must take what we are forced to take.  and if that is not enough you might remember that in the GM deal the President and Democrats in Congress even agreed to have us the tax payers pay for the health care insurance and retirement of the United Auto Workers union members working for GM.  BB)  ARE you mad yet?  )

“In the end, unless we fully repeal ObamaCare, a nation that currently enjoys the world’s best healthcare may be forced to rely on government-run coverage that will have a devastating impact on our national debt for generations to come.

For two years President Obama made promises just like the ones we heard him make tonight. Yet still we have high unemployment, devalued housing prices and the cost of gasoline is skyrocketing.

Here are a few suggestions for fixing our economy:

The President could stop the EPA from imposing a job-destroying cap-and-trade system. (Congress would not allow this so the President is getting his way with his Czars and thru regulations under the various departments!  He is also using his hidden from the public Presidential Degrees to do so much harm.  these are the tactics of a dictator not a President of the United States.  BB)

The President could support a Balanced Budget Amendment.

The President could agree to an energy policy that increases American energy production and reduces our dependence on foreign oil. (He could lift the ban he place on drilling in the Gulf and in Alaska while at the same time giving your tax dollars to Mexico to drill in the Gulf.  He also gave your money to Brazil and its dictatorship for their drilling in the Atlantic off their coasts. BB)

The President could also turn back some of the 132 regulations put in place in the last two years, many of which will cost our economy $100 million or more. (This while allowing his favored General Electric to produce incandescent light bulbs overseas while closing their light bulb plants here in the United States!  BB)

And, the President should repeal ObamaCare and support free market solutions like medical malpractice reform and allow all Americans to buy any healthcare policy they like anywhere in the United States.

We need to start making things again in this country, and we can do that by reducing the tax and regulatory burdens on job creators.

America will have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Look no further to see why jobs are moving overseas.

But, thanks to you, there’s reason to hope that real spending cuts are coming. Last November you went to the polls and voted out big-spending politicians and you put in their place men and women with a commitment to follow the Constitution and cut the size of government.

I believe that we are in the early days of a history-making turn.

Please know how important your calls, visits and letters are to the maintenance of our liberties. Because of you, Congress responded and we are starting to undo the damage that’s been done.

We believe in lower taxes, a limited view of government and the exceptionalism of America. And I believe America is the indispensible nation.

Just the creation of this nation was a miracle. Who’s to say that we can’t see a miracle again?

The perilous battle that was fought in the Pacific, at Iwo Jima, was a battle against all odds, and yet the image of the young G.I.s in the incursion against the Japanese immortalizes their victory. These six young men raising the flag came to symbolize all of America coming together to beat back a totalitarian aggressor.

Our current debt crisis we face today is different, but we still need all of us to pull together. We can do this.

And that’s the hope we hold tonight as Americans. We will push forward to reclaim the greatness of our country and to proclaim the liberty upon which we were founded.

And we will do so because we the people will never give up on this great nation.

God bless you, and God bless America.    ####

Tea Party Rep. Refuses Congressional Health Plan | The Blaze.

This is a start towards restoring our government; may it continue in full force.  BB

******************************

From The Blaze:

A newly-elected GOP Rep. announced that he is refusing the congressional health insurance plan in a show of solidarity with the American people.

Rep-elect Joe Walsh (R-IL) told the New York Times that he will stick to his Tea Party roots and decline the government health care provided to members of congress.

“I don’t think congressmen should get pensions or cushy health care plans,” he said. But it‘s a decision that’s not being welcomed by everyone in his family. Walsh’s wife has a pre-existing medical condition, and she’ll now be charged with the difficult task of finding a plan on the open market.

Walsh joins two other Republicans in declining the government’s health plan. So far, incoming Reps. Bobby Schilling (IL) and Mike Kelly (PA) have made similar decisions.

Co-opting the Anti-Spenders | Cato @ Liberty.

This article says what I have been thinking and not wanting to believe about the options available to we who love our country and are still sane.  The Democrats are gone; they have been totally taken over by the Leftist Socialists.  That leaves us with the Republicans because to try to introduce a third party would merely ensure that the Democrats stay in power.  But  those who will be in leadership positions in a Republican Congress are of the old school of spend and grow.   Yes the Republicans can take back the House and the Senate with new people this November but how much power will these new people have to shape legislation?  None!  So unless the current Republican leadership has an epiphany  I am not sure Obamacare and Dodd-Frank will not continue  and Obama will continue to rule.  Hope I am wrong, but some smarter than me are feeling this way too.  BB

Co-opting the Anti-Spenders

Posted by Tad DeHaven

Voters who recognize the need to make major cuts to federal spending and think returning Republicans to power will accomplish this feat could be in for a big disappointment. Recent comments to the Washington Post made by former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R-MS) make it clear that anti-spending candidates elected in November will be fighting against their own party — not just the Democrats.

From the article:

Former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), now a D.C. lobbyist, warned that a robust bloc of rabble-rousers spells further Senate dysfunction. “We don’t need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples,” Lott said in an interview. “As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them.”

Lott actually provided one of the more memorable moments in my career as a Senate staffer. The scene took place in the office of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) at a regular meeting of “conservative” Republican senators to discuss politics and policy. The setting was several months before the 2006 fall elections in which voters sent the Republican majority packing.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), who I was working for at the time, was pleading with his colleagues to make a last ditch effort to cut spending. Coburn argued, correctly, that voters were fed up with Republican profligacy. In the midst of the discussion, Trent Lott entered. Strolling about the office while chomping on snacks, Lott dismissed Coburn’s suggestion in his good-ole-boy southern style.

Instead, Lott said the Republicans needed to tell voters that putting the Democrats in charge of post-911 America would leave the country vulnerable to terrorist attacks. In other words, Lott’s solution was to scare voters into keeping the Republicans in charge.

Lott might be gone, but the current GOP leadership seems to share the same aversion to actually reforming government. They will attempt to “co-opt” candidates who come to Washington on an anti-spending platform. (See my post on Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)).

In a recent Washington Times piece, John Ellis makes a compelling case for why 2010 is not going to be a replay of 1994:

Nobody can doubt that House Minority Leader John A. Boehner and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell are good and loyal Republicans, but they lack everything that made Mr. Gingrich the author of success in 1994. Both are passive and timid and lack the drive and energy a real leader needs. Both are primarily managers rather than public voices of their caucuses. Neither can dominate a TV screen as Mr. Gingrich could, and neither is able to capture the public’s attention by focusing issues sharply and succinctly. Mr. Boehner is a wooden personality devoid of Mr. Gingrich’s charisma, and the slogan: “Boehner for Speaker,” which is beginning to appear, is hardly inspiring. Mr. McConnell is amiable but retiring, never arresting or incisive.

Indeed, the current Republican leadership bemoans the Obama administration’s reckless big spending and deficits. But other than complain and insist that the president should “pay for” additional spending, the GOP leadership has given no evidence that it recognizes — or even believes — that we actually need a smaller government.

Instead, the GOP has trotted out timid half-measures that they think will play well to the country’s anti-spending mood, but that would actually accomplish very little.

» Will Senate Democrats Stifle Free Speech? – Big Government.

Will the Democrats stifle free speech before the November elections?  Maybe not  and maybe so.  But what ever the “Disclosure Act” sure sounds good doesn’t it?  These Lefties have a way with words and can make a skunk sound like a sweet little kitty cat!  The facts are the Disclosure Act doesn’t disclose it closes:

free_Speech

The DISCLOSE Act is a desperate attempt to influence the November elections, and minimize Democrat losses.  Senator Schumer and the legislation’s other sponsors aim to have a law on the books that will take effect prior to November regardless of whether a regulatory system is in place to enforce the burdensome new reporting requirements.  The Act, its reporting burdens, and penalties are set to take effect 30 days after it has been signed by President Obama.

  • The DISCLOSE Act will require small businesses, corporations, and non-profit organizations to electronically file burdensome financial disclosure reports within 24 hours of making an independent expenditure.  Without action by the FEC, these groups will have to electronically file a form that does not yet exist, and face a $10,000 penalty should their filing be found inadequate.
  • Radically expand the length of disclaimers on televised political advertisements.  The Act will compel the head of an organization to appear on screen in a “stand by your ad” disclaimer.  The top donor to an organization will also have to appear on camera to stand by the ad.  The names of additional top donors to the organization must be listed on screen for a period of six seconds.  These disclaimers will be the end of the 30 second advertisement, because over half of the time will be devoted to disclaimers.
  • Companies with as little as 20% foreign ownership will be prohibited from engaging in political speech under the DISCLOSE Act.  Verizon Wireless is a Delaware corporation with over 83,000 employees in the United States.  It has over 90 million customers in the United States, but because of a minority ownership by Vodafone, would be prohibited from speaking under the DISCLOSE Act.  On the other hand, unions with extensive foreign membership, such as the Service Employees International Union, are not subject to a similar foreign prohibition.
  • In an unprecedented step, the DISCLOSE Act will expand what political speech is regulated.  The DISCLOSE Act will drastically expand the definition of “electioneering communication” doubling the time period that speech is regulated.  It will also expand what speech is regulated, shifting from a bright line express advocacy test to a more subjective “functional equivalent” test.

The Democrats in the House of Representatives managed to pass a version of the DISCLOSE Act before the Fourth of July recess.  Senate Democrats have been unable to move their bill forward and are being remarkably tight-lipped regarding their plans to advance the bill.  Senator Schumer and Senator Harry Reid will probably take drastic action to force a floor vote on the DISCLOSE Act.  We must stay focused and ensure that they do not abridge First Amendment rights during this brief summer session.

The following dialog was a comment on my post  CBO says taxpayers on the hook for Financial Bail Outs Forever While President lies to Wall Street and Public .  I am bringing to a post of it’s own because Sandy has a great deal to say.  Of course she has her own blog (snappysandy ) which I hope you all will start visiting, but she also speaks up on my blog and for that I am grateful.  This woman is feisty and  smart and angry.  Our country needs more like her.  Be especially careful in reading the last comment she made and that I have highlighted.  BB

  1. This has always been the plan. Many people seem to think that there is no, nor ever was a conspiracy. Yet, I feel that this may not be true. If you would look at what has happened in only a year and a half, you will see that this administration has literally destroyed just about every aspect of the American way of life, and nobody is doing anything to stop it.

You can say the Tea Party people are standing up to the Congress. I say, Big Deal, it’s all talk and no action, accept on Obama’s part.

It amazes me how things are happening at warp speed on the destruction side of the playing field and as slow as can be on the other side of the field where the Constitution backers stand. A turtle could move faster than those who are actually protesting all the wrong doing in Congress.

Yet has anyone noticed these morons are still at it. Nothing is stopping them. They are still feverishly working on taking down the rest of the government and they have a deadline of the mid-term election.

The Republicans and the Independents will still be having there little town hall meetings and Tea Parties, but it will be of no consequence because the damage will be done and irreversible.

  2. So what do you suggest people do Snappy? Drop a bomb on the Capital Building perhaps? Or maybe the White House?

The Democrats control Congress and Obama is in the White House. this is a fact. And they know they have only until November to get their dirty deeds done because after this show the Democrats will be a long time getting a majority in congress again. Until the Republicans take back congress there is no possibility of doing anything to change what is happening. Then there still won’t be enough Republicans to repeal health care or any other program. BUT there will be enough to stop funding on these programs. Unfortunately both parties gave Obama a slush fund with the Stimulus Bill and the huge Budget last year so he can move ahead on a great deal without congress. This is why they are pushing for the Financial Reform bill because it gives the Treasury Secretary almost unlimited power to spend this money any way he wants to. After 2012 the Congress and President will have a real mess to clean up. I think however that it won’t be business as usual in Washington. I think all the new federal employees hired to fill the 121 new agencies for Health Care reform will be fired and the agencies shut down. I believe the departments of Education will be shut down and go back to the states. I believe the heavy grants programs will be eliminated and any funds in department slush funds for these grants will be used to pay our debts. We just have to make sure we get the right tough people in office in both Congress and especially the President. No more mistakes like Scott Brown (tho we had to go with him because the other was so much worse). BB

  3. Brenda, you must have had a rough day. No, I would not ever suggest that violence is the answer, because it isn’t. The Tea Party people and the peaceful rallies they have been holding are the best example of how “the People” can let their voices be heard.I am frustrated with how slow justice works. We need a lot more action, like the Democrats are putting forth.

We need to Nationalize the Tea Party movement. I don’t mean back any particular candidate, nor do I mean start a 3rd Party. What I mean is Nationalize the Tea Party, have a National plan involving all the Tea Party groups. We need to raise Money for ads, we need to inundate the Internet with web sites, blogs, ads, Articles encouraging, and asking people, to join us, help us take back America. We need a Political machine like Obama has. It can be done, we just need to raise the awareness and encourage others to join.

We need the Young Republicans to go out and get more young Republicans to join the Party. We need Tea Party people to make a genuine effort to get friends, family and neighbors to join the Tea Party movement.

They are doing a good job and in a peaceful, manner and this is the way we need to continue, but with more vigor.

We need to make it clear that people, all people need to stand together to take back the idea of an America where all people are Free.

We need to make it clear to everyone on the Right (which have been very slow to move) and the Independents, that there is no more time. Time is running out. If we are to win in November, we need a lot more action. We need to bring together Nationally the brainpower, the idea people, the ad groups to remind people that the job won’t get done unless they all get involved and help.

I just think we need to make everyone aware of the fact that TIME is of the essence, and from now until November it is the most important factor in reversing the damage that has already been done, and it’s the only “constant” in the whole game. It’s like a like a Football game, you play until the clock runs out, then who ever has t he most points wins.

This is the game of a lifetime. This is the Championship game of all games to be played in this country. The clock is ticking, and who ever has the most voters on their side wins in November. Election day the game is over. I certainly want the American people to win this one.
