I found this article interesting and reminecent of  “Star Trek the Next Generation” Borgs  .

We  human beings just may outsmart ourselves yet.  I have often commented that I am happy to have grown up in the 1940’s and 1950’s when children played outside and all over the neighborhood with no fear of pedophiles.  Not that there weren’t any pedophiles then,  it was merely that we didn’t know about them and all adults watched out for children even in the neighborhoods of larger cities.  Our movies were shoot ’em up cowboy and Indians and musicals  with no scenes that would embarrass anyone or provide more information to children than they needed.  We didn’t have a childhood obesity problem because we played outside running, swimming and riding our bikes in stead of locked indoors watching MTV.

Indeed I was one of the fortunate ones.  Now I am considering myself doubly fortunate to be in my so called “declining” years because I will not have to witness the total degradation  and destruction of mankind.   Because no matter how wonderful the  nano technology sounds and the wonderful things it will allow us to do there is sure to be a more sinister use of the science long before any good comes of it.   BB

Headlines: Is Selfish Capitalism Driving Us Mad?

I found this article interesting and in the main very true (until the author’s conclusion whereby he makes two and two equal five).

Our English speaking world and especially we in the United States are suffering from what the author calls Affluenza.  Affluenza is the “placing a high value on money, possessions, appearances and fame when you already have enough income to meet your fundamental psychological needs.”  but wanting more and more and more beyond your needs.  This disease has infected every level of society, but only the rich have the power to indulge their greed and thus leaving the rest of society to suffer the effects of Affluenza with no relief of the symptoms.  So mental anguish is the result.

It is the symptoms of Affluenza that I addressed in my blogs on Universal Health Care,  people wanting the government (read that someone else) to pay for a basic need instead of using their own resources, older Americans wanting more and more from the  young workers, and children out of control with their demands and parents who feel compelled to fulfill these demands.  It is killing Western society as we know it.  It is killing the American spirit of self reliance and independence.

Year ago Lew and I sat down and discussed what we felt was more important in our life.  Did we want more money and things?  I made a good income and  Lew had his military retirement and his thriving business.  Or, did we want more us?  “More us” meaning Lew, the kids and I with a comfortable home, adequate and healthy food, nice but not designer clothing without too much pride to shop thrift shops and most of all to have  Mom home when  the others walked in at the end of their day.

After deciding just what was more important to us as a family we had to ask and answer the all important question of , “Just how much security is enough?”.   Would we need a $300,000 RV when we went traveling or would a good mid level $70,000 RV suit our needs?   What kind of home would we need after the children left home?  Would we still need the 4/3 pool home or would a simple 2/2 apartment fill the bill?   Fortunately Lew had gone into the Air Force at 17 and stayed until he was 37 so we had a government pension and our medical coverage for life so we did not have to figure those costs in.  If we had we would have had to have both worked a few more years and been a bit more thrifty.   Finally it came down to “How much is enough in the bank?  The monthly costs of living a comfortable if not lavish life is provided so how much more do you need?  How much more do you want? I believe after all these years and even with  our rather poor  portfolio that we still made the right choice because we chose the US.

There was a time in America and not so long ago when  this was the choice most families made.  Then somehow it all changed.  This author  has aptly defined the malady.  And he has pointed out many of it’s symptoms and  the devastation caused by the symptoms as the disease spreads thru society.  He has even pointed out very well the outward and impersonal causes of the disease.   Read the excerpt below.

“The growth in greedy consumerism over the past 20 years is taking a heavy toll on the mental health of English-speaking nations.”

“What does the damage is the combination of inequality with the widespread relative materialism of Affluenza: placing a high value on money, possessions, appearances and fame when you already have enough income to meet your fundamental psychological needs. Survival materialism is healthy. If you need money for medicine or to buy a house, becoming very concerned about getting them does not make you mentally ill.

But Selfish Capitalism stokes up relative materialism: unrealistic aspirations and the expectation that they can be fulfilled. It does so to stimulate consumerism in order to increase profits and promote short-term economic growth. Indeed, I maintain that high levels of mental illness are essential to Selfish Capitalism, because needy, miserable people make greedy consumers and can be more easily suckered into perfectionist, competitive workaholism.

With over stimulated aspirations and expectations, the entrepreneurial fantasy society fosters the delusion that anyone can be Alan Sugar or Bill Gates, never mind that the actual likelihood of this occurring has diminished since the 1970s. A Briton turning 20 in 1978 was more likely than one doing so in 1990 to achieve upward mobility through education. Nonetheless, in the Big Brother/ It Could Be You society, great swaths of the population believe they can become rich and famous, and that it is highly desirable. This is most damaging of all the ideology that material affluence is the key to fulfillment and open to anyone willing to work hard enough. If you don’t succeed, there is only one person to blame  never mind that it couldn’t be clearer that it’s the system’s fault, not yours.”

I can agree with everything above but the last  sentence which I have marked in red.    With this sentence the author  places himself squarely in the ranks of the whining, sniveling, immature society that has refused personal responsibility and  independence.  He then goes on and makes the childish plea for   “We desperately need, and before long I predict we will get, a passionate, charismatic, probably female leader who advocates the Unselfish Capitalism of our neighbors.”     And of course this passionate, charismatic probably female leader who advocates Unselfish Capitalism will also advocate Universal Health Care,  a so-called Living Wage regardless of the job and most certainly strictures on business to curb profits while offering workers more and more benefits.  Heaven forbid having to make some realistic mature personal choices concerning your REAL wants vs needs, or making sacrifices  to achieve these wants and needs.

While I agree CEO’s income in comparison to the worker’s wages is outrageous, I must point out that entertainers and sports figures also fall into this category while offering far less than a good CEO whose efforts produce a prosperous business providing jobs and incomes and profits for share holders.  And yet I hear few blaming or castigating the entertainers or sports figures for their over compensation.  Certainly our author doesn’t mention them.

Do read the entire article  as the author has indeed defined Western society and the one force that is destroying us.  You might  then ask yourself where you belong.  BB

I have for a long time now realized that by giving in to the non religious atheist on matters of public displays of religion such as prayers in the schools,  removing even the Pledge of allegiance to our flag because of the words “under God, removing such harmless things as Nativity scenes in public parks and not allowing the display of the Ten Commandments which were laws the Old Testament ascribes to laws given to Moses by God himself  from any public areas has simply gone to far.

Ours has become a Godless society and I have watched this come about from the time these first strictures against religious displays  were enacted into law.

At first like most people I didn’t think there would be any harm done in removing these things from the public places if it would bring peace.  Anything  to bring peace!  It didn’t change my religious views not to see these things.  I miss them yes, but it had no real affect on my religious views as I had religion as a part of my up bringing.  It was a part of my daily life.  What I failed to understand at the time was the millions of children’s and adults who did not have religion and God as a part of their daily life and these public displays were the only inclusion of God and Godliness and Christian principle into their life.  They were now left with nothing to counter balance the effects of the evil that liberalism unleashed on the public.  The movies and music and  general degeneration in our everyday lives.  In fact, the more degenerate the more revered things seemed to become.  The picture of a crucifix in a jar of piss being considered by liberal critics as high art!  How low can we go?

Now from the benefit of 20/20 hindsight I see the horrific damage that has been done.  This is why I have been stepping up to the plate and condemning such actions as those of  our  local misfits like Salami who was offended by a simple little sign in a sheriffs officers car.  ( I have no doubt at all that he would not have made the same cry of being “offended” if the above mentioned picture was on display instead.)   We have become a nation tolerant of all and everything,  but Christianity.  And this must somehow end, and the trend turned around.

However, I am equally concerned with the extreme measures taken by our politicians on the campaign trail which this article speaks so well to:

The first, which conservatives are winning, is defending the legitimacy of religion in the public square. The second, which conservatives are bound to lose, is proclaiming the privileged status of religion in political life.

A certain kind of liberal argues that having a religious underpinning for any public policy is disqualifying because it is an imposition of religion on others. Thus, if your opposition to embryonic stem cell research comes from a religious belief in the ensoulment of life at conception, you’re somehow violating the separation of church and state by making other people bend to your religion.

This is absurd. Abolitionism, civil rights, temperance, opposition to the death penalty — a host of policies, even political movements, have been rooted for many people in religious teaching or interpretation. It’s ridiculous to say that therefore abolitionism, civil rights, etc., constitute an imposition of religion on others.

Imposing religion means the mandating of religious practice.  It does not mean the mandating of social policy that some people may have come to support for religious reasons.

But a certain kind of conservative is not content to argue that a religious underpinning for a policy is not disqualifying. He insists that it is uniquely qualifying, indeed, that it confers some special status.”  end of excerpt.

We have to be careful not to allow  the extremists to control this movement back to establishing the United States as a Christian nation as we allowed the extremist to destroy us as a Christian nation.  Charles Krauthammer  is correct that our politicians in their zealous desire to get votes are leading this extremist parade.   They are also very misleading in what the Constitution actual says,  Just as the liberal extremist were before.

As far as the politicians are concerned it will stop as  soon as they are elected to office, but the mobs  of fanatics that they have gathered along the way will still be there trying to enforce a national religion which is just what the constitution admonishes against.

There is a middle ground.  One that our nation managed very well to follow until the liberal uprising beginning in the 1950‘s.  This is the trend that we the people need to reverse.   This middle ground where we proclaim ourselves a Christian nation while not imposing  our Christian values on others, and in fact tolerating all others values as long as they do not conflict with ours or the laws which are for the most part based on our beliefs.  This is where we need to move back to.  Not that all was so wonderful before the movement.  No.  Catholic’s wore horns according to my father until he listened to and voted for John Kennedy.

Saner heads must be allowed to prevail to keep the good that has been gained and to throw out the bad that has gone to the far extremes.   The movement has begun locally with little things like whether or not a prayer will be said before a council meeting and it will slowly carry on from there.  We do however have to stand together and not allow the ignorance and intolerance of the Salami’s of our society to again gain the upper hand.  When they are “offended” we must be offended by their  ignorance and intolerance and we must speak up against them.  We  must be equally loud in speaking up against those so-called experts who willfully misread our Constitution and proclaim a simple sign stating the belief of the police officer driving that patrol car as being illegal.  If you don’t agree with the sign then look the other way.  It wasn’t and isn’t meant for your benefit anyhow since you are already lost to reason and very possibly to  God also.  BB

I was please to see the letters to the editor in today’s N&R and that apparently I was not the only person offended by  M. Reza Salami, the UNCG professor  who was offended by a sign in Guilford County Sheriffs  officer’s patrol car that said ‘Jesus is my savior”.    I of course blogged on this same subject stating that I was offended that he was offended.  I was more offended that he took this  offense while being charged with drunk driving.

Have you noticed that more and more people are beginning to speak up to those who thru their intolerance of  our culture  are going about destroying our culture in favor of their own imported culture, or their own intolerant ideas.  The bureaucrats in Washington and the elite at our universities have shoved this multiculturalism stuff down our throats for years now and we have taken it as the tolerant and freedom loving people we are,  but are now beginning to fight back.  This is good people!  Enough is enough.

America is a country build on freedom and tolerance and allowing all people to do as they want,  choose  how they live, how they worship the God of their choice, say what they want without free of retaliation and do more or less what they want as long as they remain within the laws.  The United States is also a Christian country.  Yes, as hard as it may be for some of our newly arrived immigrants to accept, we are a country built by and for people who believe in  the Christian Bible.  Our laws, our culture and our lives are based on the lessons taught in the Christian Bible.  It is also a country where the majority decides what is to be done for the over all good of the population.

But somehow in our effort to be tolerant and allow all the freedom we all cherish  we allowed those who disagree to take away what we the majority want.  We allowed God to be taken out of our schools.  We allowed smut and filth to fill our air ways in music and talk shows.  There are those of us who are now demanding that prisoners of war who are sworn enemies of our country be given the same legal rights as citizens of our country. In fact, the prisoners themselves are demanding the rights to be tried in our country rather than to be sent back and tried by the laws of their own countries!     A bit of irony there wouldn’t you say.  These terrorist are our enemies and determined to destroy our country and yet when they are caught and being brought to justice they refuse to be sent back and tried by the courts and justice of their own countries but demand the right to be tried by our laws and tried as citizens of our country.  And sadly we have foolish Americans who feel that they should have this right!  The case is now gone so far as our Supreme Court to determine the status of these terrorist prisoners.

We are, in fact, bending over back wards to accommodate the haters and self absorbed who care nothing for  the rights of all Americans and the culture that has been forged by a freedom loving and fair minded groups of citizens over  the past 300 years.  They care only about their own narrow ideas and because they are privileged to live in the united States they have the freedom to demand the rest of us comply with their views.

Two years ago we went thru a Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas phase.  Do you remember that?  Do you also remember the backlash with some stores actually being boycotted for their Happy Holiday  pandering to the non Christians in this a Christian country  celebrating a Christian holiday?  Well, Merry Christmas is back and being said loud and clear.

There are also those who are trying to impose upon us all their beliefs in just how the universe was created.  They want what they call  “creationism” to be taught along with what we have learned thru scientific discovery.  A school board in Pennsylvania was thrown out of office and a new board elected when they went against the will of the majority of people and tried to rewrite the science books.  A Christian nation we may well be but we are also an intelligent people who favor the acceptance of what is before our eyes over mythology.

The protests may be over rather trivial things like Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays, and now a bit of outrage over  a very foolish man making a stupid profession of offended sensibilities, but  the momentum is growing to become intolerant of intolerance,  and this can only be good in a freedom loving country.  BB

Hate Rules  When Good  People Remain Silent.

Leonard Pitts is a fine commentator whom I used to read faithfully and now only browse because I think he has gone over the line on racists issues.  I can remember and pin point exactly when this happened.  It happened when Pitt’s son came home and told about an incident where he was questioned for what he and his father felt was simply because he was a Black.

Pitts lost his perspective then and became a racist.  I can understand his outrage as a father at this particular White person, but I can not excuse his turning what had been a sane and Pulitzer winning commentator into  raving racist.   It is sad.

The incident with his son should not have happened, but given the extreme crime rate among young Black men neither could the clerk at the store be wholly blamed either.  Both Pitts, his son and the White clerk are unfortunate victims of the overall degeneration of the lower class Black society.  And whereas some Blacks are acknowledging this and admitting that we as a nation have a real problem and the problem lies with the Blacks and is a Black problem to fix .  This is so because the White population has done all it can to provide opportunities for all people to rise out of poverty and can do no more if the people themselves refuse to take the opportunities.  As proof I offer the stats that tell us Whites are on welfare an average of 18 months and then never to return.  Blacks on the other hand average 3 and one half years on welfare.  Many families both Black and White  are multigenerational welfare recipients.  But here again it is by far a Black issue that is growing daily unchecked as children have children who in turn have children and none of whom finish school or make any effort to get out of poverty or even to allow themselves to be dragged kicking and screaming out of poverty.  When the welfare rolls were reduced to try a bit of tough love in getting these people off the welfare rolls they simply turned to crime as their means of support rather than the government dole.  Go back and check the spike in crime rates as compared to states efforts to reduce the welfare roles if you doubt me.  The facts are all at your fingertips if you are reading this blog.

Anyhow Pitts had a fairly good article today where he condemned fundamentalists of all religions.  His lead in to the story was the incident of the teacher whose class named a teddy bear Mohammed  which is as common in Muslim countries as Joe in our society and the fundamentalist want her stoned for this “sacrilege’.   Then Pitts went on to make his point that fundamentalist of all religions are wrong.  Doug Clark whom I do read and enjoy and even like as a journalist and as a human being took umbrage at this and  defended fundamentalists on his blog today.  In fact, he totally missed the point of Pitts article and I imagine he was not alone.

So, my comment:  I agree with what you are saying Doug.  People can be fundamentalist of their chosen religion and not be ready to kill anyone who does not believe as they do.  But!  And this is a huge and extremely important BUT.   It is when the majority of the fundamentalist sit back and say nothing or do nothing when the extremists of their faith will do anything to see that the world in general conforms to the dictates of that faith who are the culprits.  The silent ones who accept and by their silence condone the actions of  few who will kill and lie and hate in order to see their views are the ones that prevail not just in their group but by all  peoples all over the world.  These are the fundamentalist we must fear and the ones I believe Pitts is speaking of in his piece today.

A stupid cartoon raise the ire of Muslims around the globe who rioted in the streets (thank goodness in their own cities!) and put out contracts to kill the journalists who dare to print these cartoons, but who sat mute when 3000 innocent people were killed when Muslim fundamentalists flew an air plane into the World Trade Center.  Or worse, much much worse,  these quiet fundamentalists who sit silent when  children  in their own cities are burned alive by hate filled fundamentalist suicide bombers.  These are the fundamentalist Pitts was speaking of as I read his article, and these are indeed the fundamentalist of all faiths whom we should all condemn and fear.  BB

Two of my favorite people (Joel and Potatostew ) are on opposite ends of a problem that we as a society will soon have to grapple with seriously. That is the issue of just what constitutes a marriage and who is eligible to form this special union. I am somewhere in the middle where human compassion for the individuals involved can be taken into consideration, but at the same time we as a society do not jump off into deep waters by opening up the issue of marriage as it has throughout history been known to any manner of interpretations.

I have for years believed and preached that homosexuality is a genetic predisposition and not a choice. I feel society should accept homosexuals and lesbian couples and give them all the rights to raise children and adopt children, as well as to work at any jobs they are qualified for. In fact, they should have all rights, but one. They should not be permitted to legally marry. The argument that being legally married would strengthen the relationship doesn’t stand water when you consider all the divorces that legally married couples end up getting. A piece of paper does not a relationship or commitment make.

But, this particular piece of paper extended to gay couples would open a Pandora’s box of social and legal problems. Marriage confers certain benefits to spouses that are not extended to other members of society. Just off the top of my head is Social Security and some other retirement benefits that were made law to protect the wife who in the traditional family did not work outside the home and earn these benefits herself. Now we open marriage up to anyone, and we will because once the door is open there will be no closing it again, then what about these earned benefits? It is already the law that they go to the partner in a marriage in case of the death of the other, or as in the case of Social Security while the husband is still alive the wife whether or not she ever worked would get a SS check that is a percentage of her husband’s. What is to keep any number of combinations of partners and any number of partners from “marrying” and therefore qualifying for these same benefits. Under a law allowing any kind of combinations of relationships besides the traditional man and woman (husband and wife) could have a man “marrying” his sister-in-law, his aunt, his next door neighbor as well as his wife and they would under the law ALL be eligible for an SS Check under his Social Security. I promise you this will happen because people are always looking for ways to beat the system and get something for nothing.

There is simply no end to the legal problems that allowing gay marriages would cause. On the other hand, a piece of paper does not promise commitment. A couple who are committed will stay together no matter what. Men and women have forever lived their lives and died together and raised families and had great grandchildren and never stood before a preacher or judge.

Now, what should and could be done: In the case Potaostew mentions where the woman wants her uncle to care for her children but the state of Utah law will not allow it because he is cohabiting with his gay partner then these stupid laws should be changed. Parents should be allowed to specify who cares for their children when they can not and unless these people are known to be criminals then the arrangement should be permitted. In any case, children should never be placed in foster care when an adult or adults are willing and able to care for them.

Another case is allowing gay couples to adopt children. This should be permitted. Being gay is not being a pedophile! In fact most pedophiles are married heterosexuals men. Hat there are homosexual pedophiles, yes, but be reasonable here and look at the individuals and don’t just out of hand accuse and accept as truth because it is rumored or even because there are “clubs” of homosexual pedophiles. Don’t bother to look now but there are also “clubs” of heterosexual pedophiles, “clubs” for entire family swap parties and any other perverted sick thing the humanoid animals mind can conceive.

The other case that is often reported and is wrong is when the gay couples can not visit each other in hospitals. Or when one partner in the relationship is denied the right to dispose of the body of the other partner and authority falls back to the blood relations. Gay couples, or any couples or individuals for that matter, should be afforded the right to designate who will be considered to have these privileges. I knew well two elderly ladies (not gay) who were badly hurt by this next of kin stuff. The one hadn’t seen or heard from her children for years, but when she was hospitalized her closest friend could not even visit her dying friend and had no say in what was done to her body after death although she was the one person who knew what her friend wanted done. It turns out that the children had her body cremated and this was the one thing all of us knew she was afraid of. She had been badly burned as a child and was afraid of fire. It made no matter that she was dead and the body just an empty husk; her wishes should have been honored. These things are wrong and can be worked out, but leave the marriage laws alone. Just don’t get into that Pandora’s box.

If we could all just exercise a little sanity and throw in a bit of humanity then surely all problems can be worked out. Why are sanity and humanity, especially humanity so hard to come by? BB

The truth will out and the Truth will always win and a few more nice high sounding phrases are ones we have all been raised on.  However, these and other such statements aren’t true at all.  If the truth were so powerful  the injustices, crimes and pure malice in the world would not  be happening with as much frequency as they do.

 Recently a very astute blogger made this statement while posting on the Wray case, “You can’t expect to make such a serious accusation against a person, force them out of their job, and expect people to look the other way without evidence.”

Dear Lord I wish this were so, but it isn’t and from the vantage point of having watch injustice and inhumanity and cruety and crimes and hatred for many years  I had to answer: 

 I am not sure I can agree with you on this point Sam. This injustice happens everyday and people look the other way. Some see the deceit but look the other way due to malice towards the injured party.

Some, especially colleagues in the workplace, know the truth but choose to remain silent in order to cover their own buns. Of course you can’t blame them for that because those who stand beside a victim if they have something to lose will surely fall with the victim.

Most people however just are too busy to give the episode more than a passing glance and a shake of the head. But there are unfortunately very few who will step up to the plate and point out the falsehoods and demand the truth. Joe Guarino and Ben Holder took some vicious pounding for a long time on their sites for trying to make some sense out of the obviously bogus charge of racism level at David Wray. Joe didn’t know that Wray was not guilty, he just felt the man was not guilty of racism and tried to prove his point on that issue. Then there were the few of us who stayed with Joe and Ben more as moral support. We tho had nothing to lose in doing so except to take some flack from a few who disagreed with us. 

The point is that you can not expect people to demand the truth. You can more readily expect people to not want to get involved and therefore look the other way. Criminals know this and are therefore confident they can pull off their crimes.

But now we have  this marvelous invention called the Internet which  allows like minded people to know each other and come together. Who knows perhaps the world will change one blog at a time. BB

We humanoids have so structured and regulated our lives that we are required to take and pass a test to do the most mundane things. We take a test to be permitted to drive a car, take a test to practice medicine from the most skilled surgeon to the nurses aide who gives sponge baths and carries bed pans. We have to pass an exam to defend another in a court of law, and we even have to take a test to arrest that someone before they get to court. We have to test to give a perm or a hair cut, or sell real estate. We have to test to preach or teach or even give a test. The list of activities in our daily lives that require taking and passing a test in order to perform the activity just goes on and on and on. However there is one pursuit ,and to my mind the most important of all human endeavors, which requires nothing but two fornicating “naked apes” of the opposite sex to execute, and that is making a baby. No matter how intellectually challenged or morally corrupt any two “things” out there in our world are they have the right to bring another child into this world and call themselves parents. There really ought to be a law, but there isn’t, so the torture and slaughter goes on unabated.

Billy Jones post “Another Dead Baby” cast a shadow over yesterday and last night and still hangs with me today. Sometimes I wish I had the power of God for one moment so that I could sterilize all the misfits on Earth. BB

We will be a unified country once again. We as society have been slowly moving into a more fragmented society, beginning in the 60’s. That fragmentation of society explain such things as the current societal mood to patriotism and the like. The 60’s and 70’s was an awakening period for our country. When the youth born after WWII started becoming adults, they began to rattle the rigid societal structure the previous generations had put in place in response to the effects of the 30’s and 40’s on the country. Even though the awakening period has long passed, its effects are still present. They, who are known as “Boomers”, initiated the cracks in the system, these cracks, decades later, have now widened into gaping holes and crevices. Now, in the 2000 decade, we as a nation have become very fragmented in our values. We have (almost) forgotten what it is to be a nation.

What does this mean in the long run? Well, eventually, as history has shown, a crisis will shock the very foundations of society and survival as a nation will be in peril. Such a crisis will force the nation to unify if they are to survive. We got a glimpse of this unity in the immediate aftermath of 9-11, when the country temporarily forgot its political differences and came together as a nation to defend freedom. Our nation will face another one of these great crisis, just as it has before (eg. WWII/GD, Civil War, Revolutionary War, King Phillips War) and it will remember what it is like to be a whole nation again, with all of the fixings that come with such a condition: renewed patriotism, renewed sense of direction and values, and things like “duty, honor, country” will be an ingrained thing once again.

So fear not, while there will be troubled times ahead, our nation will reform back into what you are longing for. We will just have to put up with some hardship in the meantime, but guaranteed, we will be a patriotic nation under God once again!

Southern Fried, Yes I guess there could be much to discuss here and I am willing to participate as long as I feel something beneficial is taking place and being said. That does not mean agreeing with me, but it does mean that I require thought given to responses and not just rhetoric. This has never been a problem with you since all of your responses are thoughtful.

1) SF: “There are many types of “patriotism,” Brenda. There’s blind following of national authority figures, there is xenophobia and jingoism. There is even — believe it or not — principled dedication to following the Constitution. Not all of these sorts of patriotism are concurrent in their outlook or outcomes.”

BB: Patriotism is none of the above SF. Patriotism is the deep seated love of country and countrymen and a desire for their freedom, liberties and peace for which you are willing to give all you have to give in order to preserve. Patriotism is being able to get beyond ones own determinations of what is right and find and agree on what is right for the brotherhood which makes up the nation.

The things you describe above are just manifestations of what some would claim is patriotism, but which are in reality the antithesis of patriotism. There is no love for countrymen in any of these, there is only love of self and ones own beliefs and goals regardless of what is best for the nation as a whole. These things are divisive and corrosive and are blatantly evident today. These things are also extremely dangerous to the people of the nation because if not put aside for true patriotism they will become the downfall of the nation. No outside enemy can ever defeat us, we can only defeat ourselves. And, I believe we are now in the process of this national destruction.

2)SF: “There are some good points to having a drafted armed forces, particularly in time of war. Unfortunately for the boosters of the draft, we haven’t engaged in a real “war” in the classic sense since 1945. And don’t forget, the last time we had a draft, it was far more of a burden on the poorer classes than on the wealthy. IMO, if we’re going to have a draft, it should be 1) ONLY for a true defensive emergency, rather than to facilitate the building of an American Empire that we’ll never be able to maintain, and 2) ONLY if the wealthy and powerful have no more means of avoiding it than the peons.”

Southern Fried we haven’t engaged in a so called “real war” since 1953 actually with the Korean War because that was the last war where the combatants were defined as such. War today is what we are in now. We are the only defined combatants fighting an enemy who hides among the population. This is the “war” of the present and the future.

If 9/11 was not a “true emergency” then I simply don’t know what a “true emergency” would be. We were attacked on our home ground after decades of being attacked on foreign soil and doing nothing about these attacks. If I am reading you correctly you do not consider 9/11 a “real emergency” and therefore we can not agree on what one would consist of. Perhaps the bombings taking place on your own street?

Besides, realistically, in an “emergency” is entirely too late to draft and train an army.

I have blogged on this before but will outline again what I would see as a draft into national service: All (males and females who are able bodied) to be drafted into national service for a given number of years, and having a choice of how to serve. Either in the Armed Services, Peace Corp, Volunteer teaching mentoring programs in the ghettos, volunteer medical services in our hospitals and clinics, whatever. For this they will be paid a salary adequate to keep them in what ever place they are assigned, and if they pursue advanced education during this time this too shall be a part of their pay. At the end of the service they will receive advanced education to equal the years served.

The important portion of the draft IMO will be three months of boot camp. No one will be thrown out of the service due to bad behavior, they will instead be punished. Discipline, responsibility and integrity will be learned and Lord only knows our youth today could use a dose of these. I have spend time on both college campuses and military bases with young people and believe me when I say there is no comparison with the two groups. The college campuses are populated with children who have the bodies of adults and perhaps significant intellect but who have the common sense of unruly children. I loved my years as an instructor with these students but I was not then, and am not now, blind to the fact that campus life is detrimental to both the mental and physical well being of those who attend college before they have matured. This is not to say they do not eventually mature but it is a long hard road in comparison to having some discipline instill early on.

The above is my idea of what our youth need and what our country needs to do with our youth in order to prepare them for the future they will be faced with; the future that I am afraid is swiftly coming at us and for which we are woefully unprepared at the moment.

This would also take care of your stipulation that both rich and peons serve.

3) I won’t get into a discussion of religion with you or anyone SF because it is hopeless. I will state a fact, the founders of our country then and the leaders all down thru the decades to the present have always begun any public meeting with a prayer to the one God of all men. This God has been removed from the public domain and the lack is evident in our schools and on our streets. You mentioned the 1950’s, then do some fact checking and compare the stats for crime, poverty, illegitimacy, drug use, whatever for then and now. I am not saying that removing God from our public life is the sole contributor of the rise in all our ills, but surely replacing God would do no harm and just might do some good if the Ten Commandments are taught. And this is as far as my discussion of religion will go. I will still pray for One nation under the care and blessing of our One God.

The draft was far more of a burden on the poor than on the wealthy. Yes, but that has been the case throughout history. The officers usually come from the middleclass or well off but the foot soldiers ranks are filled with the poor and lower middle classes. This is also the case with the Volunteer Army that we now have in place. (The rich quite simply have all things better than the poor SF. Even in Socialism this is true because man being man there are ones willing to work harder and smarter to get more and there are those unwilling or unable to get more. Blame God for giving us all a freewill to choose our course if you need to place blame for the inequities of life.) Drafted or Volunteered the outcome is the same, has always been and will always be. That is, until the “war” comes to our own streets and then rich and poor alike will be it’s victims. Our soldiers are now in Iraq and Afghanistan and other hotspots around the world so that the fighting does not come to our streets, but remains on others. Our soldiers understand this, it is only segments of our population buying into the demagoguery of politicians who don’t seem to realize that it is there or here. 9/11 was the first step in the enemy coming to our streets and we took the war right back to them. If we had not then 9/11 would have been followed quickly by more assaults on our cities.

Quite often I am inspired beyond a comment by other’s blogs. This post is one of those times. I visited Noteworthy, better known as Bubba’s blog, and the following is what I came away with.


Patriotism is simply not part of our lives anymore. First we did away with the draft which was a huge mistake. Eight weeks of boot camp made men out of boys. It also instilled a love of and appreciation of country. The draft united the population with an identity as Americans, as veterans, as Airmen Soldiers or Marines.

After removing the requirement for national service for young people we than took the flag , the national anthem and God from our schools. What we have today is a people divided and viciously attacking each other over every little social issue that comes up. This is the result of the disconnection from the bond of being Americans.

We do as a nation look for it; we want as individuals to belong to this group called Americans who can think and feel and believe with the good of all as its unique characteristic, but it eludes us. Go back and read your history books or just talk to older Americans and you will learn that the people had this “something” during two world wars and a terrible depression. So what happened? Some would say Viet Nam happened. But people 58,000 dead is a relatively small number in our history of wars. (see: ) This was ostensibly the reason for making our s an all volunteer army and doing away with the draft. By Dear Lord was the price we have paid of disconnection from our unity as Americans worth the turmoil and strife and discord we live with daily as a nation today. Was it worth disbanding the one common denominator the men in our nation had one with the other? Was it worth discontinuing the one common song and pray our children and our citizens had in it’s public gatherings. I think not.

I think not because we as a people are looking to replace this connection, and looking in all the wrong places for something that had been so easily available to all with a single united service to our country, a song and a prayer. Now we turn to gangs or clubs or associations. None of which offer universal goals and beliefs thus leaving us with gangs and clubs and associations that are at odds with other gangs and clubs and associations.

And after 9/11 we had this spirit of oneness, this patriotism back for a short time. It felt so good. We were united in purpose and we looked for and found common ground in our goals to care for the wounded, the dead and dying and the grieving. We were also united in seeking out our enemies and the perpetrators of this crime against Americans. Then somehow we lost that spirit again. We backed off and went about our lives; those still involved and the survivors began in-fighting over a “fitting” memorial (which hasn’t yet been built because it hasn’t yet been able to regain the spirit of honoring those who died over the selfish wants of the survivors and developers and politicians.)

I wonder will we ever again be “One nation, under God”?  BB

    A friend sent this too me because she knows how passionately I love my country. My grandparents came here from Russia in 1910 in steerage and made it their beloved land. The flag was always flown from my Grandpap’s porch. My husband and I fly the flag on the embankment above the patio of our rental apartment and often see neighbors stopping to view the flag. God how I love this country, and am so damned proud to be an American. I hope you enjoy this tribute with Elvis sing America in the background. It is borrowed but I feel sure the author wouldn’t mind my sharing. Brenda

         There were two articles in yesterday’s News & Record that just keep worrying at the back of my mind. One was a commentary by Thomas Friedman about the Muslims and how as a group they have yet to condemn the terrorists attacks. Terrorists attacks where all have been carried out by Muslims. Muslim leaders continue to say that Islam is a religion of peace, and as a group the least thing said or written about Muslims where no one is harmed or killed and the people are called out by their Imams to riot in the streets. But, never have they once even whispered a note of sorrow when young Muslim men carry out the deeds that their religion’s writings, text books and leaders call upon them to do.

            And, if this is not bad enough the world in general does not condemn them. Not once has there been an edict from the United Nations condemning Muslims as a group for fostering and encouraging these atrocities. Our own government refuses to acknowledge that Muslims are the world’s terrorist. Security checks at air ports continue to pat down little old ladies walking with canes as possible terrorists! It is as if Muslims as a group and Muslims terrorists are coated with Teflon because anything they do that is wrong simply slides off and is somehow forgotten or forgiven. Because of course, Islam is a religion of peace.

            The other article was about the Black Caucus in North Carolina state government and their highly unethical practice of giving scholarship funds to the children and relatives of members of their own group. These people solicit funds for scholarships leading the donors to believe they will go to needy students and then skim off funds for their own children who surely are not needy if their parent is a state politician. And no one in the Black community sees anything wrong with what they are doing. In fact Blacks who do speak up speak up for the culprits, and refuse to acknowledge that the behavior is unethical. This same attitude is seen every time a Black who wears a business suit is caught with their hand in the cookie jar. (Blacks who wear jeans and tee shirts are fair game however and arrested all the time for far lesser crimes!)

              Diane Bellamy-Small’s behavior and violations of trust she has as a city council person and demands for special treatment she feels due her as a city council member not only went unpunished but her supporters were even permitted to viciously harangue City Council woman Florence Gotten because she dared to ask for Bellamy-Small’s resignation. And the Black Pulpit Forum, a group of ministers no less, defended her unethical and perhaps unlawful behavior.

             I could go on and on with examples from all over the country where Blacks are supported by the Black community even after they have been proven guilty. They can be caught with bribe money of $90,000 in their freezer and still continue to sit in the US House, they can be video taped using drugs guilty beyond a doubt and still be re-elected Mayor of our nations capital while in prison, and they can even get away with murder.     

             American Blacks are coated with Teflon too. The name of their Teflon coat is the cry of “racist”. All they have to do is utter the word and White government officials cave in. In the case of the Black Caucus Scholarship unethical behavior the Chair lady, our own Alma Adams, is the one using the R word, the Teflon word.

           Now tell me just how do these two groups of people differ? Oh, I realize that one group commits horrendous crimes against humans while the other is just thievery but really, how do they differ in their attitudes towards members of their group’s criminal behavior?    BB

         The New York Times headlines proclaim: “Justices Limit the Use of Race in School Plans for Integration”. ( )

        “WASHINGTON, June 28 — With competing blocs of justices claiming the mantle of Brown v. Board of Education, a bitterly divided Supreme Court declared Thursday that public school systems cannot seek to achieve or maintain integration through measures that take explicit account of a student’s race.”

         “Voting 5 to 4, the court, in an opinion by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr invalidated programs in Seattle and metropolitan Louisville, Ky., that sought to maintain school-by-school diversity by limiting transfers on the basis of race or using race as a “tiebreaker” for admission to particular schools.”

         “Both programs had been upheld by lower federal courts and were similar to plans in place in hundreds of school districts around the country. Chief Justice Roberts said such programs were “directed only to racial balance, pure and simple,” a goal he said was forbidden by the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.”

          “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race,” he said. (Roberts)” was the most profound statement made in all the yammering done by all the Justices (see excerpts of all their statements on later pages, and also see Op Ed pages for opinions).

             It has been 53 years since Brown v. Board of Education made busing children all over cities and counties to equally integrate schools. This was a necessary first step towards offering a free and equal education to both races. It was also a necessary first step towards having the races mingle and become familiar with each other. It was a necessary “first step”. It is however now time to move beyond this necessary first step and into a society where a persons civil rights are truly granted. Civil Liberty means the right to choose! That is what Martin Luther King Jr. and all the civil rights workers wanted for America: the right for all of it’s citizens to freely choose where they went to school, where they ate, where they shopped and worked and lived. The right to choose for themselves and not to be told that they had to sit in the back of the bus!

              This goal, this right of choice has been achieved. Yes, discrimination due to race still exists, but so does discrimination due to sex and weight and intelligence and every other thing one person can find to boast of over another person. Discrimination is a sad fact of life that will never disappear as long as human beings are the fallible creatures we are. But we have now gotten in place an amendment to our Constitution that makes this overt discrimination unlawful and protects the right of all people no matter their race, sex or creed. And it has been almost three generations of living together in the schools and workplaces and neighborhoods.  Now it is time to let the people have their full civil rights and choose for themselves. And since the granting of civil rights and the end of segregation began with integrating the schools this is the appropriate place for it to end.

          It was a sad fact that we had to use and abuse our children to achieve racial equality, but it had to be. The young who had not yet formed prejudices of their own and who as innocent children would reach out and not see color when they looked at a school mate, but only see a possible friend.

          There are many who will call yesterday a sad day for America and a wrong decision by the courts and the Supreme Court. There will be others like me who worked for Civil Rights most of my life who will feel the time has come to stop discriminating because of race and forcing our children to continue to be bused all over God’s half acre just to satisfy some arbitrary figure set up by the courts and the school boards to make sure there are X number of each race in every school. Yes, it is time for us in America to truly have our freedom to choose; our civil rights.  It is time for us all to be free at last.  BB

Comment: I was livid when I saw this insanity! Didn’t spit coffee across the table just hurled the N&R across the room and scared the bejesus out of Felix our rabbit. It took me two hours to coax him out from under the bed and by that time I had calmed down enough not to send Robinson a blistering e-mail for giving print space to this blasphemy. The veterans of WWI ask that if the city erected a monument to them it be a “living” monument and not just a hunk of stone, and this is what the city did. Now 75 years later the veterans of all the wars since (including the current one) I am sure would feel the same. This is why we people of Greensboro have to fight our city council and city hall to keep the WMS in repair so as to continue to be useable by the people of Greensboro.  BB

Comment:  Fec, “The wave of the Islamic revolution will soon reach the entire world.” These are the words of the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadineja. And at the end of his speech at the United Nations in the fall of 2005, Ahmadinejad made an invocation to Allah to bring about the speedy reappearance of the Hidden Imam. This was his warning to the world thru the world organization to beware. Ahmadinejad claims he was “directed by Allah to pave the way for the glorious appearance of the Mahdi”. The Hidden Imam or Mahdi will come to save the world and in order to save the world, it must be in a state of chaos and subjugation. This then is Ahmadinejad’s plan for the world: he will lead the destruction of the Infidels and the Great Satan America thereby beginning the great purification of the world so that the Great Imam will then come forth to rescue the world from the infidel and save the world for the “true believers”. This man’s beliefs and intentions are to me very scary indeed, and it should be to the world. He has given the world ample warning of his intentions. We just don’t seem to believe him. BB

IN my late night can’t sleep surfing the web I came across this and it reminded me of I debated for immigration and used my grandparents as examples and how they became Americans the moment they stepped off the boat in New York Harbor. And, they pressed their children to do well in school and saw that they all graduated from high school even during the hard times of the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Well since then I have been taking another and closer look at the Hispanic population. I can honestly say I have never met people who are more polite and just plain nice. They are a gentle lovely people who care greatly for their families and family ties. But, it does seem to be true that their children are failing in our schools and the parents don’t seem to consider education important, unlike our grandparents.

Read the following please and let me know what you think. So many things came to mind as I read it. Like the minorities blaming the rest of us for their failure. Isn’t that what is happening right here in Greensboro with the Black community? Deena Hayes makes no bones of it in blaming the White community for the drop out rate of Black students. Irrational as that is she is not alone because I have read similar comments by Allen Johnson. Brenda

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to
capacity by many of America ‘s finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis [should be Victor Davis Hanson] talked about his latest book, Mexifornia, explaining how immigration – both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California . He said it would
march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America . The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the
United States . He said, “If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let’s destroy America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and
that an autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.”

“Here is how they do it,” Lamm said: “First, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country.” History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: “The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.” Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans.

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America , “Invent ‘multiculturalism’ and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Third, “We could make the United States an ‘Hispanic Quebec’ without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: “The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American,
we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.”
Lamm said, “I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural
subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities.”

“Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated,
and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school.”

“My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of ‘Victimology.’ I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the
fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population.”

“My sixth plan for America ‘s downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other – that is, when they
are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism in the city states and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. “E. Pluribus Unum” –From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the ‘pluribus’ instead of the ‘Unum,’ we will balkanize America as surely as Kosovo.”

“Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of ‘diversity.’ I would find a word similar to ‘heretic’ in the 16th century – that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobe’ halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the
doctrine of ‘Victimology,’ I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America , it must always be good. I would make every
individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them.”

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said, “Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis’s book Mexifornia. His book is dangerous. It exposes the
plan to destroy America . If you feel America . deserves to be destroyed, don’t read that book.”

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even
barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate ‘diversity.’ American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America – take note of California
and other states – to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast.
It is reminiscent of George Orwell’s book “1984.” In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: “War is peace,” “Freedom is slavery,” and “Ignorance is strength.”

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don’t get this immigration
monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path especially The American Dream

Wise Little Boy

Ain’t He was just a little boy, on a week’s first day.

Wandering home from Sunday School, and dawdling on the way.

He scuffed his shoes into the grass; he even found a caterpillar.

He found a fluffy milkweed pod, and blew out all the “filler.”

A bird’s nest in a tree overhead, so wisely placed up so high.

Was just another wonder, that caught his eager eye.


A neighbor watched his zig zag course, and hailed him from the lawn; Asked him where he’d been that day and what was going on.

“I’ve been to Bible School ,”

Two hypothetical cases similar to the VT case to chew on:

 Based on this explaination given by CA :  “The theory (wrongful death suit) is one of negligence. But for the negligence of A, there would be no harm to B. It is like the fire a few years ago that killed all those people at that nightclub. The club owners didn’t start the fire, but if their club had been up to code, the disaster would have been averted. In other words, they owed a legal duty to provide a safe environment for the people that visit the club and they breached it. I suspect the same will be said of VA Tech. That had they acted sooner after the first shooting, they could have prevented the second shooting.    Sometimes it is defensible, sometimes it isn’t.”

Okay youse Guys answer me this:

  1.          I live in an apartment complex of eleven buildings that spreads over 15 acres and is three quarters of a  mile long with woods and then more one family residences all around which is much smaller than the VT campus in size and people. There is a shooting murder in one of the buildings and the killer left the scene and is “on the loose”. Police are on the scene doing what police do in this situation. The individual murder took place in the building at one end of the complex. Two hours later the killer shows up at the club house at the ther end of the complex from the first killings and kills everyone in the pool area. Is/was the apt. manager and/or owner responsible to let me know a killer is on the loose in the area? How soon? How liable is the apt. owner/manager?

                 Another: there is as killing in a building on North Battleground and the killer took off. It is a busy business district surrounded by residences and a very busy street. Two hours later the killer shows up at an apt. building complex one half mile from the individual killing and murders everyone in the pool area. The police are on the scene of first murder….. etc. Are the police required to shut down all traffic on the street? For how long and how far? If the police don’t shut down the street and notify all residents with in say a half mile of the first killing is the city responsible for the deaths in the mass murder when the same killer is involved?

             What I am saying is there was a murder in a building in a complex equal to that of a small town, with thousands more commuters coming into the “town” in that time period. Again the killer makes his get away. Would it be the city administration’s duty to block all roads into town and close all buildings? And to notify everyone in town of the murder immediately or within how many minutes of the murder. Is it “reasonable” to even consider taking such drastic actions as suggested above? Now you must also take into consideration the fact that for every mass killing spree compared to the number of individual killings is …(.well I don’t know the stats) but would assume the number to be huge.

  3.             And one more; say one person at the pool hadn’t been notified and lives long enough to tell a family member?

Mar. 23, 2007 – How China Purchased the United States. Part I

        On the evening of January 11, 1944, President Roosevelt was unable to give the annual presidential State of the Union speech before Congress so he instead gave it to the entire nation by way of his famous Fireside Chats. Cass Sunstein, a prominent liberal law professor at the University of Chicago called it “the most important speech of the century”. It’s importance is due to the fact that it is the first and most far reaching speech and endorsement of an American president for the legitimizing of the welfare state. The idea of the welfare state is that government MUST GUARANTEE the social and economic security for all citizens.

        The fore fathers and creators of the United States of America promised all citizens the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing more! Originally the statement read: life, liberty and happiness. With the word happiness meaning financial well being and security for each individual. It wasn’t long before the delegates realized the mistaken assurance that promise made. No free man or free government could promise happiness (financial security) to it’s citizens. Not all individuals are endowed with the same abilities and talents. Nor are they all desirous of pursuing the same goals. So it follows that in the scheme of things some individuals will be more financially secure than others, and for a wide variety of reasons. One of the founding fathers was a prime example, Samuel Adams, the Father of the American Revolution was a brilliant orator and writer who could have chosen to turn his talent into a source of income and “happiness” (security) for himself and his family. Instead he chose to spend his talent and his time deriding the English Parliament and King George’s treatment of the colonies, and involving himself in other political matters. In that time politics was the realm of the wealthy because there was little pay for holding public office. Because of Adam’s choices his family lived on charity. When he was sent to Philadelphia as a delegate to the first Continental Congress the city fathers got together and purchased a suit of clothing for him to wear so his appearance would not embarrass them.

         The Founding Father’s quickly added the words the “PURSUIT of happiness”. All men were guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This belief was accepted by all from July 4, 1776 to the last century when our 32nd. President after being elected in 1932 set about initiating his New Deal with Americans and that New Deal he finally legitimized with his speech on January 11, 1944.

         It is important for all citizens to recall the one thing the founding fathers knew and avoided when creating a new country and new government, a welfare state is in fact Socialism. And Socialism morphs easily into communism as the state takes from those who have to give to those who have not and in so doing reduces the haves to the level where they can not maintain the investments which produce jobs and job security forcing the state to therefore take over and operate these factories and businesses. The state owns all. All people are guaranteed a job for life and healthcare from birth to death. There are in theory no classes or divides, no people getting more than any others. Well anyone who has been paying the least bit of attention to Russia and China the two largest communist (socialist) countries in the world should be cognizant of the fact that there are very definite disparities between peoples and groups. They should also be aware of the standards of living of even what is in this country considered the middle class. Doctors and scientist are happy the state allows them a three room apartment and a salary of $100 per month. The factory worker gets a two room apartment and only $70 per month. People line up for hours at the grocery stores to be able to purchase a limited supply of groceries from the state own stores and the state own factories and the plants and the state own farms. There are shortages of every type consumer goods because production levels are very low. Why are they low? Why should any one work any harder than the laziest worker if all are going to be paid the same amount for their labors?

           As for health care in Russia and China since the Iron Curtain fell we have been treated to the horror stories concerning the conditions in their hospitals. If we ever get to view the conditions of health care in China I am sure we will see the same. The polluting of the rivers in China have made headlines. these same rivers provide the drinking water for millions of people.

        This is the welfare state that Franklin D. Roosevelt started and legitimized with his introduction of Social Security, a promised payment of funds to all elderly upon reaching age 65 based on how much they put into the system. (The dirty little secret of Social Security that most Americans don’t realize is that every cent a person has put into the system thru pay roll deductions is returned to that person after 2 to 2 1/2 years and after that it is nothing more than Welfare for the Elderly with the younger workers picking up the tab. I hear all the time” I deserve this because I paid into it”. The answer is , “Yes you paid into the fund but certainly you are getting much more back.”

         The Social Security Act was quickly followed by several others that would come to be known as “entitlements” 1)a payment to widows and orphans from this same fund called a Survivors Benefit. Having had experience with the Survivors Benefits I can tell you they are generous enough that a widow and her children can live well enough if not extravagantly. In fact it was President Reagan in 1981 who stopped paying the benefits past age 18 to surviving children who went to college.

       2) a Medicaid Bill providing health care to the needy and poor. A bill I fully support and feel should be expanded for the needy children who will be the future workers and supporters of all this largess.

      3) guarantee of funds to those who are disabled and unable to work. The only problem with this program is the large disparity in what is considered a disability.

        I admit these are all worthy causes but they are like that second bathroom, nice to have if you can afford it.  The thing is we the tax payers can not afford them.  We couldn’t then because we were in a depression and we surely can not now given what has been done to the programs and the funding for the programs.  In the beginning the payment into the Social Security account from a workers pay check was only one half of  1%. Another fact of life then was that most people did not reach age 65 so it was deemed a “safe” age for retirement and promise of payment of benefits which of course would not need to be paid.  Things have changed considerably over the years. With advances in medical care and then the Medicare Bill which came along in 1965 people began to live much longer. It is not unusual for a person to receive Social Security Benefits for 10 or even 20 years after retirement. And though the payroll deductions into the Social Security Trust Fund is now up to 15% (7 1/2% from each the employee and the employer) the fact of any one person cashing out their contribution in 2+ years is still true.

        World War II came along and the military requirements meant jobs were available for everyone. This prosperity continued into the 1950’s and 1960’s. Everyone was on top of the world and everyone remembered FDR. He was in fact all but a God to my parents and grandparents who had lived during the “Great Depression” and Roosevelt was credited with getting us out of the Great Depression. Well, really he did. He got us into a war and wars mean jobs and jobs mean money.

        The prosperity of the 1950’s and 1960’s was also primarily due to the war. First, there were jobs during the war years and good money being made but no consumer goods being produced to spend it on so people had money in the ‘50’s for homes and appliances and cars and colleges for their kids. The government encountered a problem tho after the troops began returning home from the war that threatened another depression with more workers than jobs. The government solved this problem by offering the soldiers coming home a GI Bill for special schooling or college which ushered in a huge middle class in the United States which further added to the prosperity of the country for decades.  The GI Bill was probably the only outstandingly prosperous and good legislative act of the  government  since the Constitution of the United States of Amrica was written.  Itr made possible the United States as we known it today; a country whose citizens enjoy the highest standard of living in the world.  The only shame is that our elected officials failed to make more of this wave of prosperity we at one time were riding.

        Anyhow, getting back on topic, the second thing the government did which created jobs was to rebuild Europe with what was called the Marshall Plan (the greatest idea ever conceived after a war. Do read about it if you never have. The Marshall Plan did more to insure peace than any thing else ever could.) It wasn’t freeas  we were taking back IOU”s from the Europeans for this help. So our factories kept producing and jobs were available into the 1960’s rebuilding Europe and then continuing into the 1980’s to supply the restored and gaining in prosperity of the European people with much wanted American products.

          Enter President Lyndon Johnson who in 1965 made another welfare state deal with Americans with his Medicare Bill which guaranteed all elderly Americans health care for a very small monthly fee taken from the Social Security Franklin D. Roosevelt had given them. Johnson also expanded Medicaid which I grant was needed, I have always felt the poor and needy should be cared for. Then Johnson looked around and decided more “poor” kids needed to go to college and since the GI Bill wasn’t getting enough of the population in college now that there were fewer soldiers so he started the ball rolling towards the government stepping in and guaranteeing  student loans. The money for students loans weren’t from the government,  but were government backed and the government paid the interest on these loans until the student graduated and began paying back the loans themselves. The banking industry loved this bill! It was a sweetheart deal made in Heaven as far as they were concerned and they couldn’t lose because if the student defaulted then the government paid off the principle after paying the interest all those years. Billions of dollars are owed the government on defaulted student loans. (another story for another day).

        The Medicare Bill did set up a separate tax for the so-called Medicare Trust Fund, but it basically operates the same as the Social Security Trust Fund and is stuffed with all but worthless T-Bills. Both extra tax systems are pay as you go schemes where those paying now are carrying the load for the present recipients. When more funds are taken in than are needed then they are to go into these trust funds. The funds are then taken out of the Trust Fund and used for current government expenses while being replaced with Treasury Notes, or promises of payment by the same government( read that: tax payers) from future taxes when the funds are needed. I suggest some of you take a good look at the predicted value of treasury notes in the future when they are “needed”. They ain’t got no value at all! And next year when the first of that huge group of so-called baby boomers (children born to the returning WWII veterans) start to retire and demand their Social Security the only place our government has to turn is to tax you the tax payer more, or to do what it has been doing for years now and that is sell more of our treasury notes and assets to China. We are selling our country to China thru buying far more from them than they are buying from us. Jobs that were once in the United States have now gone to China.  Our government is spending more and more than it is taking in in taxes meaning the government must “borrow” this money from somewhere to pay the defitcit.   Along comes China quite willing to take our governmentss IOU’s for its goods.  Thus my title for this rant: China now OWNS the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!   Sincerely, BB

          EVERY child born in the United States has a birth certificate registered in their name in the county and State of their birth. The cost to get a copy of this birth certificate is minimal, in some cases the first one is even free. These birth certificates are needed to get a Social Security card which is necessary for any type of welfare assistance. They are also required to register for school. Now they are required to apply for or reapply for Medicaid.

           “…..people in North Carolina who have applied or reapplied for Medicaid must present an official birth certificate or other “satisfactory documentary evidence” of their birthplace and citizenship status.”. according to the new federal Deficit Reduction Act that went into effect in September. Now we are hearing sob stories that over a thousand North Carolinians are being denied Medicaid due to this requirement. Well that’s just too damned bad!! If the parents of these children haven’t the intelligence to get and hang onto a birth certificate for their child I feel so sorry for these dear children. Unfortunately an intelligence test is not required to create a baby. I am also pretty sure that these people are, or rather have been, on welfare and given ample warning that they would need these documents and to apply for a birth certificate or some other form of documentation to prove citizenship if they have lost them. In fact, they most probably were even given the forms and could have gotten help filling them out if need be. So there is no excuse. None whatsoever.

         The stories I read stated that a small boy was denied heart surgery which he desperately needed because of this lack of proof of citizenship. I also seriously doubt that it was so “desperately” needed that there wouldn’t be time to get a copy of the birth certificate from the county and state in which the child was born If the child had been “desperately in need” of medical care he would have be given emergency care at most hospitals. (Note: I did say “most” but certainly not ALL hospitals as some unfortunately closely watch the bottom line.)


         My rant therefore is two fold: 1) against the stupidity of the child’s parents, and 2) against the news media for making a sensational story out of one that should have been informational rather that accusatory as the stories I have read have been. Why didn’t the news media simply explain what was required by the new law and tell people what needed to be done. But that I suppose wouldn’t sell newspapers so a big deal had to be made against the “nasty” state that was depriving this poor child of the health care he needs. BAH HUM-BUG!

Back in September (see below for dates and excepts) I did two blogs that pointed out a problem with race relations that we as a people MUST overcome if we are to move forward. We are only looking back and fighting the same old battles that have already been won. That’s why Clarence Pages’ commentary in Friday’s News and Record disappointed and hurt so bad when I read it.

I have watched the NAACP over the years and supported them and their initiatives in the early civil rights struggles. Then I began to become disappointed and then just plain disgusted with their activities along about the early 1980’s when they seemed to have lost sight of their purpose of advancing the Black population. The leadership was still stuck in the old issues of the 1960’s and refusing to recognize there were new issues that needed attention that were not being addressed. The issue of equality had been won and cemented with laws. Blacks were free to go to any school they desired, free to live anywhere they could afford to live, free to eat in any eatery, just plain free at last.

There was no longer a need to address these issues. The Black middle class was growing by leaps and bounds. Black poverty was down to about 20+% . The goals set in the 1960’s had been reached. But, even the Black politicians were stuck and not seeing, or at least not addressing the growing problems within the Black communities that had nothing at all to do with the old white racism, and everything to do with the Black lower class culture itself. 70% of Black babies are born to unwed mothers as opposed to 26% in the 1960’s. Educational levels and drop out rates among Black young people both girls and boys was up from the 1960’s level. Drug use among the young Blacks was out of sight; diseases like AIDS was much more prominent in the Black community per capita than any other group. Unemployment naturally is higher for Blacks than any other group and will continue to be a problem as long as the underachievement in school is the norm for lower class Blacks. All these problems not being addressed; not even being acknowledged except to blame White racism. HOW? HOW COULD WHITE RACISM BE THE CAUSE OF BLACK CHILDREN FAILING TO ACHIEVE WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO THE SAME SCHOOLS AND IN THE SAME CLASS WITH THE SAME TEACHERS AS WHITE CHILDREN?

That is why when Bruce Gordon, a former Verizon executive and a brilliant BLACK man with the ideas and energy and a grasp of the real issues took over as President of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) I had renewed hope for the first time in years. Well, that was nineteen months ago and now he is gone. The old guard and old ideas won out and now I wonder when the problems that are rampant in the Black community will be addressed before another generation of young Black men bleed out their lives on the streets or spend them behind bars. This while the young Black women raise their babies alone without father’s thus almost assuring their sons and daughters will follow in the path of the parents.

Though I wrote about Greensboro in my two September posts, the issues are nationwide. It is a new day with new issues and the Black communities need new leaders! Think about that the next time you go to the polls to vote, the next time one of the Black leaders tosses out the race card,  the next time the test scores are posted for schools like Dudley and Smith. And ask yourself how your White neighbor is to blame. THEN maybe when the real issues are recognized all Americans Black, White, Red and Brown can come together with solutions. This will not happen however until the old guard is gone and the enlightenment of a new leadership is allowed to grow. So many lives have been lost because of the old guard in the NAACP were allowed to push Bruce Gordon out.  Dear Lord, again I ask: When will we learn?


Sep. 6, 2006 – A Plan to Talk Sanely About Racism in Greensboro

“We need a new set of rules to govern how we deal with racism. But first we need to define just what racism is. ( And do not have a useless “sensitivity” class to do it because the Blacks just bitch and the Whites feel guilty.)”

“…..when setting up a new group to define racism a great deal of care has to be given not to have any of the old guard or anyone who has shown a tendency towards a position on the panel. The panel after it is formed must also have the right to remove by consensus any member whom they find to be biased. This group of arbiters are going to have to accept that some aspects of racism can not be defined, but they need to try to get concrete examples of what not to do or to do just as the women’s movement defined certain measurable actions in the business places.

Next and very important: we who went thru the battles and changes, say from 40 years old and over both Black and White need to step back and let the younger people set the definitions. We older soldiers have been hurt by, and are still remembering how it was, so we can not see clearly how it is NOW. And now is what we are to be concerned with. Let the past go; it’s over, so get on with life. With the GTRC thing half the population of Greensboro either wasn’t here or was too young to be aware of what happened so it was just rehashing and old tale. No, it is time to move on and we oldsters just can’t seem to let go or move on. Young leaders need to step up and push us aside.

I am ready to step down, but I don’t feel that I can as long as untrue and unjust accusations are flying around that need to be rebutted. I am also in a position to speak because my speaking out will not harm my business or my children or my career. Many people hold back and remain uninvolved due to these considerations. Being retired the most that can be done to me is the verbal shots that may hurt but never shut me up in the past and won’t now either. But yes, my career and my reputation suffered then. Now it is just my reputation. Actually since I started right in to the political scene in Greensboro when I started blogging, the reputation was doomed from the beginning. You can not call a spade a spade with no embellishment without angering those who feel differently from you.

But people, it is a new era and one thing is certain, we can not go on as we have been. These last few months of turmoil have shown us that.

The Passing of a Remarkable Man

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.  Mr.
Sense had been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago
lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing
when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, and that
life isn’t always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more
than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a
classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and
a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parents
when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband, churches became businesses, and criminals received better
treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that
a steaming cup of coffee was hot, spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded
a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his
wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by two stepbrothers, My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

One of my favorite columnist in Townhall is Star Parker. She is a fantastically insightful and intelligent lady who just happens to be Black. So after viewing the CNN show “Skin Deep: Racism in America” and not being particular impressed since it was old ground re-covered and not getting, I thought, to the real issues anyhow, I was happy to see that Star had written her views of the show and her views surprisingly are much like mine.

That is what this post is about: the real racism in America that is shared by both Blacks and Whites, and is destroying a large segment of the Black race in America as well as causing social problems that threaten to overwhelm the social systems set up to maintain order in our society. It is particularly interesting because it is this type of racism that is also destroying the fabric of a city I have come to love. Greensboro, North Carolina is a beautiful city in an ideal location to become one of the more favored cities on the East coast. But … …

Near the end of Ms. Parker’s article she writes the view that coincided pretty much with mine : “So, in answer to the CNN crew’s question, there is indeed racism under the surface in our country today that we’re neither really aware of nor willing to admit. It’s a racism of diminished expectations.

A racism that says blacks still need special treatment in education and job placement, that we can’t give black parents freedom to choose where to send their kids to school, that we can’t let low-income black workers build wealth through a personal retirement account, instead of paying Social Security taxes, because they won’t know what to do. This is the racism that will keep this community disproportionately in trouble.” (end quote) My generation as the first to work for, and live with, the problems of integration and civil rights and over coming the Jim Crow laws and attitudes, understood that Blacks needed a hand up in order to catch up. Being suddenly in integrated schools and restaurants just wouldn’t do the trick.

They needed to claim their place in the work place and colleges in large numbers and not just the “token” Black that was being touted as progress. I was around and watched it happen. A Black was hired and given a job with no real responsibilities but a high profile. It was frustrating to the Black and disgusting to those of us working to see change. More Blacks were needed in the work place and schools not to satisfy favorable publicity for the school or company, but so that both Blacks and Whites would gain a respect for the abilities of Blacks that had been denied and denigrated since the first black slave was brought to America. Sadly the worst thing that could be done to a people is to destroy their pride and make them believe in their own inferiority.

Unfortunately it was so easy to do with African Blacks when brought to a society with outwardly more sophisticated tools and other accouterments of life than the culture they had left behind. Whites of course seeing only the primitive clothing and weapons placed the black slaves just a tad above the other farm animals. Soon this attitude of Black inferiority was shared by both Blacks and Whites. And this became the prevailing attitude for 300 years. Both races therefore needed a period of seeing for ourselves the worth and abilities of the Black Americans. Over the years many Blacks were able to gain self respect as they became assimilated into the Western society. This was especially true after the Civil War when thousands of Blacks migrated north into the factories and began to slowly improve their standards of living.

The Blacks who remained in the South were forced to continue the social behaviors of slavery without the benefits of being cared for. Life was a struggle at best and self respect a long hard battle in gaining when society at every turn points out an imagined inferiority. World War II helped Blacks take a large step towards gaining self respect as they fought just as hard as the Whites and even against prejudice were able to garner medals and merit awards. These men came home and just as their counterparts in the lower class Whites they demanded some changes be made in the work place and with regards to salaries and benefits. This was the catalyst for the Civil Rights movement. It was the gaining of some self respect and then coming home to the same old ways that spurred the small Black middle class to rebel against the social system that kept them in as unfair bondage based on a misconception, a lie.

The attitudes of the country outside of the deep South had also undergone a change and was ready to support the Blacks who were standing up for more rights. The rights offered to all Americans. The black population alone could not have made the changes or gotten the laws passed. It took the help of mainly middleclass Whites to demand and get the laws passed to force schools and businesses to admit more than the token Black. This need to go beyond the token lead to the quotas and preferential treatment made into law in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. I believed these laws to be necessary and right, therefore I didn’t begrudge the quotas and the preferential treatment that several times discriminated against me a white woman. I would go on and prevail with another position, but that Black person who was given a position over me when I felt I had the better qualifications might not get another chance.

All of this was necessary in forging Black leaders to show the way and it just happened as fate or history catching up would have it that my generation was the one to make the adjustments necessary. It was as simple as that. Someone had to be willing to step off the sidewalk for a Black person as they had always been forced to step off the sidewalk for Whites, and the time that came just happened to be ours. As stated above, I did not begrudge these small sacrifices and perhaps injustices against me a White person because my Black contemporaries needed a hand up if our society was to pull itself out of the hatreds, biases and total misunderstandings one race had for the other. I began to begrudge these same quotas and preferential treatment however when they continued into my children’s generation and are now still in place for my grandchildren’s generation. Now after 53 years of nationally required integrated schools and almost 40 years after the laws were passed and enforced for the quotas and preferential considerations it is past time for the need of these measures. Long past time!

At this point the preferential treatment is doing much more harm than good in that it allows Whites who wish to continue to believe in the inferiority of Blacks. And much worse, it keeps Blacks wondering about their own abilities to progress without special treatment. Unfortunately there was another unexpected psychological backlash that happened along the road to gaining equality. The something that happened with the gaining of power was the growth of a deep resentment and desire for revenge. Not from the Blacks who had suffered discrimination, but from their children and grandchildren. I once had a Black lady my age tell me that her children were angry with her and those before her for “taking it”.

These children who were raise in another world with different values were ashamed of their ancestors and had no understanding for or about the struggle. They lived in a time when lynchings of Black people were no longer tolerated and they had no fears about speaking and acting out. At the same time they themselves were admitting with their actions in demanding more and more special treatment for Blacks that they still held ( and hold!) a lingering and fatal self doubt and even self hate. When people meet as equals there is no animosity. It is only when one feels inferior to the other that anger grows and controls the actions of the angry one. Those who feel themselves equal do not allow themselves to be considered victims!

These insecure members of the Black community and have allowed themselves to be exploited by unscrupulous Black leaders. Leaders who with their demands for unequal treatment of those of their race are fostering the deep seated feelings of inadequacy in their followers which then arouses the anger that stops rational thought. This then gives the Black leaders the inordinate power to exploit both races for their own personal gain. They prey on Black’s their people to keep them in bondage to the old and outgrown feelings of inferiority which leads to anger and keeps these manipulative leaders in power no matter what outrageous crimes they commit. Feeling of inferiority and self hatred that lead them to the racism of diminished expectation. Diminished expectation is the real racism that we face today. The Racism of Diminished Expectation is held predominately by Blacks against Blacks, and themselves most particularly.

It is this that drives the self destructive behaviors of today’s Blacks. It is this attitude that excuses as truly Black the behaviors that are designed to hold a population down and from achieving economic equality in the world with the rest of us. Speaking “Black English”, doing poorly in school so as not to “Act White”, accepting an illegitimate birth rate of upwards of 70% no matter what harsh living conditions these dysfunctional families have to suffer or the damage done to the children leading the girls to follow in their mothers footsteps of families without fathers and poverty and leading the boys of these families into lives of crime, drugs and all too often, early death. These angry Blacks who still feel inferior are exploited by criminal Black leaders who have them convinced that it is right and good to get revenge on the White community. It is only “getting theirs back” when funds are misused by Black elected officials.

They elect these people again and agian and refuse to accept that they are only harming their own constituent by taking funds that could be used to bewtter the neighborhoods and lives of athese people. A good example of Blacks accepting and being proud of bad behavior in their politicians was selecting Marion Berry as Mayor of Washington DC while he was in jail for taking bribes, soliciting and using the services of a prostitute and using drugs. This was not hearsay but was actually recorded and Berry admitted to doing it. Yet his constituents who were overwhelmingly Black re-elected him to office to represent them and see to their best interests.

They did this because of their self hatred and Racism of Diminished Expectations and they felt Marion Berry was all they were worthy of. He was like them. Any Black man who is an upstanding and a decent human being is “acting white” or an “Uncle Tom N—“and therefore not like them. And, sadly there are many Whites who outwardly thru the racist feeling of superiority to Blacks continue to pander to them and pass over or ignore Blacks bad behavior as just natural for Blacks. Believing that they can’t be held to the same standards as Whites. Greensboro City Manager Mitch Johnson was interviewed by Jerry Bledsoe for his book Cops in Black and White and the conversation and quoted remarks were published in Part #4. Johnson holds a strong view that Blacks needn’t be held to the same standards as Whites and I called him a racist in my blog at that time for his “racism of diminished expectations”. Excerpt from Cops in Black and White Part 3 : ”

Johnson, like White, found no fault with that situation. He also found some of the other integrity issues that were raised, such as officers using their police identification cards to gain free admission to Christie’s Cabaret, where topless dancers perform, to be “no big deal.” (Johnson’s words) “I had a few officers that were higher ranked people that brought some stuff to me, and I felt like they thought it was a serious issue,” he said. “I think a lot of what I was hearing was this cultural difference between what some officers in our department felt like were appropriate standards of behavior and maybe what Robert (Robert White a black police chief before Wray. Italics mine) felt were appropriate standards of behavior from a different environment.” It was this attitude of Johnson’s that I believe lead him to excuse the very serious attack of Officer Morton on a handcuffed prisoner. An action that is grounds for immediate dismissal in any properly run functioning police department.

Yet, Johnson excused this behavior and countermanded Police Chief Wray’s decision to fire Morton. It is I also believe this racist attitude of “diminished expectation” that allows Johnson to praise the misfit and cause of all the problems, former Police Chief White. And, of course the toleration of not only bad police work, but immoral behavior by Lt. Hinson. In point of fact, I am afraid that there is a great deal of this “racism of diminished expectation” in Greensboro/Guilford as a whole, as certainly can be seen in the failure of all Black schools such as Dudley and Smith as just one example. How else explain many in the Black comunity’s praise for the vitriolic rhetoric of Skip Alston and Company on the County Commission? Why else are her colleagues and the people of her district simply ignoring and acting as if all is normal and friendly over the illegal action of Diane Bellamy-Small but this attitude of expecting Blacks to be less honest than Whites?

Why accept as good stewardship of the publics money when the Black elected leaders demand minorities be recognized in the bidding for public works and then accept and pay the outrageous over charges for the work after it is found that the bid wasn’t accurate and by bidding at a much lower price than the work can be done is corrupting the bid process. Why do our governmental bodies accept that it as alright for the Blacks contractors to lie and steal? These are all examples of Black Racism of Diminished Expectation! The Black community should be appalled and angered and up in arms to be represented by these criminals. Instead the self-hating “racism of diminished expectations” accounts for the toleration of all Black short comings even as far as being immoral and criminal.

The self-hating attitude allows the Black people to accept their ministers in the Pulpit Forum to represent them and preach to them or lead them by example to excuse Black criminals and immoral police officers and Black children running loose in their neighborhoods with guns killing other children and saying nothing about Black responsibility and blaming the Whites for everything that is wrong in the Black community. The self-hatred of “racism of diminished expectations” accepts the immorality and irresponsibility of up to 80% of Black babies being born in the Triad to be illegitimate. Black babies whose irresponsible parents both father and mother insure that they will grow up with social problems that often lead to dropping out of school, drugs, poor work ethics and even prison.

Black hating Black ministers teaching their people to hate themselves and destroy themselves under the guise of just getting theirs back from the White man and declaring it Intolerable (White) Racism when Black children fail in schools where they are sitting side by side with White and Hispanic students using the same teachers and books. All of the above brings me to the racism of the Truth and Reconciliation nonsense that we in Greensboro were asked to shallow whole. This parody of truth put together by these same self-hating Blacks and Whites who apologize for Blacks behavior because their White brothers and sisters are after all superior to Blacks.

Somehow this Truth finding committee failed to find that those little children who were supposedly traumatized by the shooting and killing in their neighborhood that day in 1979 had already been traumatized by the shooting and killing and gang warfare and drugs and prostitution that were tolerated in that same neighborhood long before and long after that day in 1979. ( Do a check of the N&R archives as I did and you will not be able to refute this fact. I do not give source dates because there are far too many.) So much for your Truth and Reconciliation committee Report!

Another example of Black Racism of Diminished Expectations. We have a beautiful city in Greensboro that is being torn apart by “racism of diminished expectations” by both Blacks and Whites and we are allowing it to fester rather than admit that it is at the root of schools like Dudley and Smith, the destruction of our police department and the thousands (yes! Thousands!) of little children just in Greensboro alone who will not have a father at their dinner table tonight. It’s time both the Black and the White citizens of good will come forward and do what is right to root out this evil that is destroying my people. And yes, I did say MY people because I was in the first wave of the movement to help the Black man pull himself up out of the hole White people had tossed him in. Now I am in the background but trying to get others to step forward and help the Black man pull himself out of the hole he has put himself in. I only hope someone out there hears me. Brenda Bowers

In one of my meandering over the Internet one day I ran across a really interesting site: Yes it can be said to be a “conservatives” site if you want to label it, I guess. I am neither a liberal nor a conservative since I hold strong opinions favored by both camps. I am however, I believe, an intelligent person who refuses to gulp whole anything without running it thru the test of the knowledge I have managed to obtain, and retain, thru the years. Then I may accept or reject the whole, or accept and shape to my own opinions parts of what I read, hear or see. That is what has come to mean to me; a place where I get others opinions based on their knowledge and in this way add to my own knowledge base. With this attitude towards all peoples opinions I have no desire to be bothered with KNEE JERK liberals or conservatives as both annoy me. And, sadden me.

Kirk D., My money also goes to support that public park and I want a Nativity set up and shining during the Christ’s Mass season. Whose tax money carries the most weight? If the Constitution was designed to “protect” the minority then what, if any, protections are offered the majority? It seems to me that the wishes of the majority have been consistently “overruled and destroyed ” by the wants of the minority during the past forty years. I might add that any study of the decline of Cultural Morality coincides with the advent of minority rule. By decline in Cultural Morality I mean: increased behavioral problem in schools, increased out of wedlock birth rate, sexual activity beginning at younger and younger ages among both males and females, explosion of prison population in proportion to population growth, higher use of illegal drugs, exploding use of legal mind altering drugs for both adults and children (this is particularly dire in the case of children’s usage), decrease in marriages/commitment/acceptance of legal and moral responsibility, increase in tort cases overwhelming our court system (refusing personal responsibility for actions), I sure you can add to this list yourself. I repeat: It seems to me that the wishes of the majority have been consistently “overruled and destroyed ” by the wants of the minority during the past forty years. I might add that any study of the decline of Cultural Morality coincides with the advent of minority rule. You may counter that Cultrual Morality has no place in this discussion. I would disagree and point out that Cultural Morality is the basis for all laws and the cohesive that forms societies. Morality=laws=societies-laws=chaos!

    Brenda, please don’t lecture me about morality. Your idea of morality is just that, yours.

    I disagree with your notion that the majority has been on the losing side of late. It is the “minority” of the common man that has been losing. To wit:

    War protesters are now forced to stay in “free speech zones” when the president comes calling.

    TV networks are afraid to run documentaries of 9/11 because of the language used by some of the fire fighters on that day. They might be fined thousands of dollars so they dare not run it.

    The right decries the first Muslim official elected to congress and says he must prove he’s not “an enemy” and cannot be sworn in on the Koran.

    The “majority” says that gay and lesbian couples don’t have the same rights as the rest of us under the law. Same argument that was used to keep interracial couples from getting married in the first half of this century. The majority was wrong then too.

    I can go on, but I think I’ve made my point.

    Brenda, there are ample instances in our history of the majority showing a strong lack of morality. Just because the majority favor something doesn’t make it moral. I could invoke slavery or segregation but that’s too obvious. How about the death penalty? How is it considered moral in our traditional Judeo-Christian society? How is it supported by a Christian majority that is taught love and forgiveness for even the worst sinners?

    As far as the City Council and whether/how they pray, personally I don’t see a need for any government forum to start with a prayer of any kind. To me it is city business, not city worship. I’ve never been in a business meeting that started with a prayer and I don’t see the need for it at a city business meeting.

    US Senate guide to the Constitution: “For over two centuries the Constitution has remained in force because its framers successfully separated and balanced governmental powers to safeguard the interests of majority rule and minority rights.”

    As the Preamble to the Bill of Rights puts it, the amendments were added to the Constitution “in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers.” That is to say, to constrain the government put in place by a majority.

    Kirk D. I would never presume to “lecture” you on morality or moral values. And I agree Sir that the idea of morality that I hold is indeed only mine. However stated as you have I must assume that the examples I give of immorality you disagree with. In which case, you are in need of far more help that I can offer. Now that I have answered your snide remark with a snide remark of my own, may we resume this discussion as literate adults?

              Kirk, I quite agree with you that the radical and vocal conservatives have lashed back with some hasty and poorly thought out actions in the recent past. However when the people are allowed their say the majority are far more sane in their judgments (Example: The school board in Pennsylvania that was voted out of office  because of their too bias ruling on creation.)This is the same mistake that the vocal radical liberals made in the past 40 years against the ignorance and bigotry of the previous 100 years  in our nation.

            It started with the Blacks civil rights movement which was a just and much needed cause for redress and reform.  Then things got out of hand allowing all sorts of laws to be passed that were not at all the intent of our founding fathers nor the intend of reasonable human beings. Bigots, atheists  and fools  went to courts all over the country and forced rulings by liberal judges and stacked juries,  limiting and  destroying the desires and rights of the majority.  In most cases it wasn’t even what could be called a minority who pressed for these reforms, but just one person.  The courts ruling allowing the request of the one set the  precedence,  that in turn without making the ruling an actual law  in effect the ruling  became the law of the land.  These are the “laws” that we are discussing when we talk about prayers in schools and saluting the flag.  These are the “minorities” that I abhor and find unjust to the majority.

             I believe putting the mention of God (whom all religions believe in) and the flag back in our schools and our social and governmental functions can only improve, and perhaps save, a society  obviously in moral decay.

However I would challenge you Sir: I can name 10 worthy, loving, kind and beneficial ideas and actions that directly related to moral values as expressed by religion for every one act of cruelty. I won’t enumerate because I am sure that you can too. You just jumped in to hastily make a point because you misunderstood the point I was making.
  •       Ed, Before you hop on the constitution as our founding father’s meant it to be might I remind you that never was a meeting begun by these same gentlemen without a prayer to that God our society now seems to hold in contempt, or at best relegates Him to church services on Sunday morning.

Morality (beliefs, views, understandings of how one human should treat another in a civilized manner) EQUALS laws ( agreements between two or more humans as to how they should treat each other and the members of the group) EQUALS societies ( morality or beliefs are basis of the laws or rules by which men agree to treat with each other leads to the formation of societies or groups of humans living and working and surviving together in peace and mutual benefit.) MINUS laws ( take away the agreements, or laws, between humans) EQUALS chaos (lawlessness and the break down of societies).

        (My comment on Joe’s post, “Healthy Competition”. Again I gave in to my habit of using ten words where one would do. So I brought my comment home.)

              First to address the comments: Bad things happen to good teachers, good chiefs of police as well as good doctors. In most cases of this kind that I have become familiar with the bad things happen because of greed or fear and/or jealousy. Human beings are cruel insensitive louts for the most part. Add this to a superior brain and you have wars, injustices and crime. But from time to time one truly remarkable soul comes along and gives us hope that there are more like him somewhere out there. (sigh)

             Now my thoughts on the topic: Joe I see absolutely no reforms or any other actions that will change, slowdown or stop the idiocy and costs of entitlements. There is simply no way the average person can afford his own health insurance and certainly no way he can afford doctors or drugs. It is an impossibility. This goes for the costs of a college education. And it took only 10 short years for this to happen.

              1962 I graduated with a BA from a small state college for a total of $5364. That was four years of tuition, books, room and board, allowance, clothing, and a car. My mom kept track of every penny. I purchased an excellent heath insurance policy for myself at age 21 for a premium of $20 a month. In 1972 a BA from West Liberty State costs $5000 a year for books, tuition, room and board. I had to give up my excellent heath insurance policy and rely on the no so excellent one provided by my employer because I could no longer afford the premiums.

             What happened in those 10 short years? Medicare, Medicaid and government backed student loans and outright grants, as well as a few other rather minor, and far less costly, welfare programs. President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society.

           The only solution at this point is a total collapse of the economy and the government. That is of course an oxymoron because a collapse of the economy insures a collapse of the government. Why? Because in the Great Depression of 1930’s it was businesses that failed and the government was able to pull the country out. Companies have since then transferred their liabilities to the federal government so in a collapse the federal government will fail while the companies scoot out of the way.

               Companies will not be as altruistic in helping the economy and the starving masses survive as the government, I promise you.  Thyey will provide jobs but only if there is a profit in it for them.  Jobs which people will be expected to work if they wish to survive.  Jopbs at the lowest wages possible to keep employees, but not truly enough to much more than survive.  Companies are not in the business of charity.

              However before you point the finger at those greedy companies and damned business practices let us take another look at the greed of the working class. It was the working class who lived during the Great Depression who pressed for and voted for The Great Society. It was greedy Every Man as Bubba pointed out on Joe’s post “Healthy Competition” who wanted more and more and got it. The greedy Every Man who shoved off the care of his elderly parents onto the shoulders of the government so the young wouldn’t be burdened. It was greedy Every Man who demanded more and more benefits both from employers and from the government (Social Security is expect to totally support the retiree. After all, they can’t be expected to go into their savings for food or rent!) It was greedy Every Man who forced laws for student loans so parents didn’t have to make some sacrifices to educate their children. Children who should then be expected to support parents in their old age, but of course will not because the government with Social Security and Medicare will do it.

                  What greedy Every Man failed to understand was that he is the governments piggy bank. Greedy Every Man was demanding more and more from himself. Or more precisely, his children and grand children and great grand children!

                 Now we are at a point far beyond the point of no return. Our young are burdened with a debt they will never in two lifetimes pay off. Our government has indebted our current children’s great grandchildren. The wealth of the world is with business. Business is not altruistic! Business can not be coerced by voters to pass benevolent legislation. The great god Mammon will rule. That is after the burden placed on the young by the old and disabled and needy causes a total collapse of the working public that supplies the funds for the government largess that pandered to the greedy who demanded these entitlement programs in the first place.

             At this point there simply are no reforms or adjustments that will make our governments ( this is a world wide problem) solvent and return our economy back to a self-reliant 1962. The only solution is total collapse and perhaps an opportunity to do it over and get it right this time.

    Lawsuits Make Us Less Safe

              The laws that govern how and when a civil suit can be brought for payment of money for “Damage, injury, or a wrongful act done willfully, negligently, or in circumstances involving strict liability, but not involving breach of contract,” is the most abused of any of our laws. Personal injury awards have become so outrageous that companies have been bankrupted by them. And, contrary to common belief these law suits are not making the products we buy safer or better. What the lawsuits are doing is keeping new products off the market and even dampening research into new products and drugs.

              One example is the flu vaccine; when millions of people are vaccinated there is just bound to be a few who for some unknown reason die. Nothing is full proof and everyone has a unique body chemistry based on life style and genetic inheritances. There is simply no way to guard against all the millions of things that can go wrong when millions of people are treated. But due to lawsuits companies are reluctant to produce the vaccine. Now only a handful of companies make it and we are even forced to get our needed supply every year from overseas companies.

             If the Bird Flu pandemic does happen millions of American will die because they could not get the needed vaccination. Our government is not announcing this of course but common sense and a bit of reading between the lines tells the story. A vaccine can not be produced until and unless the virus mutates and is passed from human to human. Scientist tell us this is such a virulent virus that the spread of the flu will be very fast. The vaccine that is available from the few companies ready to produce it simply will not be able to meet the demand. And beside that what is available will be prohibitively expensive. This shortage would not have happen if drug companies hadn’t been scared back into only producing tried and true drugs because of abusive lawsuits.

              Our government has been getting annual flu vaccines mainly from European countries. Tort laws are much more stringent in Europe. People have to pay ALL court cost for both parties if they loose the suit.  This has a considerable dampening effect on false claims.   Whereas in the United States there is no penalty at all for a false or frivolous suit. Usually there aren’t even any lawyers fees because the lawyers take the cases on a percentage basis. That is, if you win the suit the lawyer will get his lion’s share of the award off the top, then court costs are paid and what is left is given the “victim”.  Our former Senator Edwards made his millions as a tort lawyer. I just try not to hiss when he stands up and tells us how very much he is concerned for people’s health and welfare.

                This is not to say there are not many legitimate suits that should most certainly be filed against negligent companies who knew their product was harmful. The tobacco suits come to mind. At first I was very skeptical of these suits because I felt smoking was an individuals choice and the tobacco company didn’t after all twist any ones arm. Then with investigation it was found that they knew tobacco was highly addictive. And knowing this they actually targeted certain groups to promote smoking knowing they would then have a steady supply of customers into the future. Furthermore, the CEO’s of all the major tobacco companies perjured themselves before Congress when asked if they had done studies and knew that their product was addictive. The fact is there are still tens of millions of people still smoking and millions more start smoking every day.

                However the loses to the public far out number the good done. Consider just a few of the products companies have developed then decided not to market for fear of lawsuits.

    * Monsanto once developed a substitute for asbestos — a new fire-resistant form of insulation that might save thousands of lives

    * Fear of being sued reduced the number of American companies researching contraceptives from 13 to two

    * .After scientifically groundless lawsuits against breast-implant makers bankrupted Dow Corning, Japanese silicone makers stopped producing a pain-reducing silicone coating for hypodermic needles.

    * Union Carbide has invented a small portable kidney dialysis machine. It would make life much easier for people with kidney disease, but Union Carbide won’t sell it. With legal sharks circling, the risk of expensive lawsuits outweighs the possible profit.

    * Bendectin would probably cure your morning sickness. For 27 years doctors prescribed the drug to 33 million women because it was so good at stopping nausea and vomiting. But you can’t buy Bendectin today because lawyers kept suing the manufacturer, Merrell Dow, claiming the drug caused birth defects.

    Studies did not show that Bendectin caused birth defects, and Merrell Dow won most of the lawsuits. But after spending $100 million in legal fees and awards, the company gave up selling the drug. Bendectin has never been effectively replaced, and morning sickness is now a major contributor to dehydration during pregnancy.

    * Eli Lilly developed a mercury-based preservative called Thimerosal that was used in many children’s vaccines. Plaintiffs’ lawyers jumped on scaremongers’ claims that mercury causes autism in children.

    * Even when new vaccines are discovered, drug companies are sometimes afraid to sell them. The FDA has approved a vaccine against Lyme disease. Want some? Forget about it. No company wants to take the risk.  There is no cure for Lyme Disease.

              What can be done to curb the incidence of lawsuits? Well we have a very workable model right in front of us with the tot system used in the European Countries. Fewer lawsuits and more useful and even life saving products are the benefits of these sensible laws. Yes, there is a chance that a product or drug will actually cause and injury or death and the company will not be held responsible. But, would you rather have your child get the Bird Flu vaccine if there is a pandemic or would you rather hold out for the possibility that a drug company will go free with a faulty product? All of life is a chance and we simply can not guard everyone and everything from harm all the time.


    After writing this article I was doing my daily surfing of the news and found another article on the misused toot system. In today WSJ.

    The following is  not my composition, but certainly relects my beliefs.  Some time ago I offered my blog site to a friend since he has no interest in starting, and keeping up, one of his own.  He is a retired civil servant (US government employee)  who in the military and in his years as a civil servant had access to “delicate” information.  He is extremely  intelligent, knowledgeable  and dedicated to the United States of America.   Today he wanted to make a statement and I am proud to present his words to you.  Brenda Bowers


    I recently heard the Lebanese Prime Minister, Fauad Siniora make these comments or rather ask these questions. “Is the value of human life less in Lebanon than that of citizens elsewhere? Are we children of a lesser God?” . “Is an Israeli teardrop worth more than a drop of Lebanese blood?”   It is a good question and one that drips with much of the same anger and poignancy, if memory serves me correctly,  as Shylock’s famous soliloquy  in “The Merchant of Venice”.  Unfortunately it is the wrong question because in this conflict there is no difference in Lebanese and Israeli blood. Brought about by  the thuggish theocrats in Tehran and also those in Damascus both peoples are being forced to pay the price. The Prime Minister needs to address these questions directly to the leaders of Iran and those in Damascus. The Hezbollah, aka, “Party of God”, started this mess by kidnapping two Israeli soldiers and killing three other in an across the border raid.  Of course this attack was only the latest in a long list of fatal harassment actions conducted by the terror group since it filled the void left by Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000. Since the creation of Hezbollah, some 20 years ago by Iran and the theocratic powers there, it has been a puppet for terror and used to spread terrorism and the Shia regime’s influence throughout the Middle East. Israel is taking the logical step against the fascist in Iran who’s leaders vow on a daily basis to wipe “Israel from the face of the map” , by retaliating against the Hezbollah and hopefully putting pressure on Lebanon to control its own back yard and kick out this terror organization. Every death that has occurred, both Lebanese and Israeli is a tragedy. But to those who complain that Arab blood is cheap must realize that it is Tehran, not Jerusalem that is setting the price. The power to stop this bloodshed does not fall in the hands of the US nor the UN but in the bloody hands of Iranian President Ahmadinejad. He could with a single word get Hezbollah to stop the bloodshed and leave a country where it has no business in being in the first place. Unfortunately there seems little hope that his will transpire.  

    By putting away the political and emotional biases from the situation, the present conflict can be seen for what it is, a battle between a liberal democracy and a fascist dictatorship. It is not difficult to see which side is in the right. Unfortunately these events are seen by some through the tinted glasses of individual political prejudices. Too many on the Left are unable to put aside their anti-Americanism, “Blame America First” and fairy tale beliefs that Islamic radicals are poor freedom fighters , so they can’t make a rational judgment. Hezbollah and Hama’s, who use terror to spread their political and religions obsessions are not seen as bad guys, but rather Israel and the US.  The media has also prejudiced the situation so that Israel’s defensive actions are cast in an aggressive light. While watching CNN the other evening, the news focused on what Israel had done, not what Hezbollah had done that day. The recent protest where the Star of David was shown on banners with the equal sign between a swastika is a prime example of this poison.  If those who blame Israel were to put away their anti-American feelings and forget their ridiculous postmodern narrative of colonizers and liberators, they would be able to see in Hezbollah something that could easily be called the Nazi Party of Tehran.  Today all Israel wants in the present is for the Nazis to go home. Hezbollah was created by a government that is as much anti-Semitic as the Third Reich. The progressive Left should be all means be highly offended by the values of this Iranian theocracy which executes homosexuals, treats women as property and restricts and oppresses minorities , both religious and ethnic. The Euston Manifesto was at least an attempt by the left to come to terms with these facts but unfortunately Israel is all to often cast by the left as the villain. If a similar group were to suddenly start firing missiles into downtown El Paso or downtown Detroit, Washington would certainly have no choice but to take out those firing the missiles and those  now condemning Israel would be crying the loudest for immediate action.

    Perhaps the questions  Mr. Siniora, as well as all the civilized nations of the world , should be asking are “Why won’t Iran pull in the chain on their Hezbollah terror dog? Are the lunatic ambitions of the Iranian President worth the life of any Lebanese or Israeli’s?  Both groups are suffering because of the presence of Hezbollah. The Sunni Muslims certainly would not do well under a resurgent Shai Iran who would destroy any form of democratization and reform. The outrage should be directed not at Israel but at Iran and Syria.  All of us wish that there was no bloodshed in the ME and that the bombs of both the Hezbollah and Israel didn’t have to take lives , especially children’s lives. However we should also understand that a ceasefire for the sake of a ceasefire will do nothing to prevent future bloodshed. It will only give both sides time to regroup. The only hope for an end to this is for Tehran to put a chain around the neck of it’s dog’s of war and terror.

    Hezbollah is now firing longer range missiles into Israel. However they aren’t doing a great deal of damage, and Israeli jets are able to see where they have been launched from because of the smoke trail left in launching and are immediately destroying these launch sites. There is no doubt that Hezbollah is a fighting terrorist group with full backing and control from Iran. Israeli troops have also found Iranians weapons left behind in bunkers as the Hezbollah moves out.

    More and more it is appearing that Iran is pulling all the strings in the Middle East. An Iran that the world has been reluctant to deal with but is now being proven to be the main instigator and supplier of terrorist world wide.

    So another significant twist has been added to the pot. It will be interesting to watch the developments between Iran and world leaders from this point on. I have been more inclined to give Syria more credit for fostering terrorist than Iran. Guess I was wrong. This discovery also lends a greater urgency to solving the Iranian nuclear problem.

    Will China and Russia finally see the light? Neither of them wants war to escalate in the Middle East to the point of dragging the rest of the world into the battles. But, if Iran manages to get nuclear weapons and is the central figure behind the Middle Eastern terrorist the situation does get very dangerous for world peace.

              I have felt uneasy about this so called “Israeli-Lebanese” or “Israeli-Hezbollah” war from the very beginning. This war is different from any that I am aware of in history in fact. Wars are normally fought by two or more sovereign countries and their armies on both, or one or the other’s, land and air space. This one is not of this normal nature.

              Lebanon is a sovereign country having control over a given land mass and the air space above it, and also having internationally recognized borders. No other nation is permitted to violate those borders without the host country being able to charge assault by the other country and declare war on the assaulting country. This would then be sanctioned by the nations as a legitimate and legal prerogative of the country being attacked.

                We don’t have that situation here. Lebanon is a sovereign recognized country but either thru willingness or by force another entity (Hezbollah) has claimed a right to their land/airspace and government and to have it’s own separate militia that can and does carry out it’s own agenda independent of the internationally recognized government. The point here being that Hezbollah has no sovereign internationally recognized country of it’s own.

               The situation is that Hezbollah used Lebanon’s land/air space to attack another sovereign country, Israel. In order for Israel to fight back this attack it must violate the sovereign borders and land/air space of another, supposedly non-aggressive, country, Lebanon. It is in fact, a “horse of a different color” or as Thomas Friedman writes in his commentary today “….this is not just another Arab-Israeli war. It is about some of the most basic foundations of the international order — borders and sovereignty — and the erosion of those foundations would spell disaster for the quality of life all across the globe.”

                 It is a situation that the nations of the world can not allow to happen, or in this case to continue. If it persists it would open up a whole different definition and dimension of warfare. It could encourage terrorist groups to infiltrate governments of weak countries and take over the sovereignty of those countries to wage war on it’s neighbors creating world wide the chaos being created now in Lebanon. Israel is not at war with Lebanon; not it’s legitimate government or its army or it’s people and yet Israel is being forced to make war on Lebanon in order to subdue its antagonist, Hezbollah.

                 This taking over of weak countries is not at all unrealistic or impossible. Hezbollah has infiltrated every

    country in the world. They are a huge well organized and well funded Muslim Terrorist organization backed by, and controlled by, Syria and Iran. Both countries are hard and fast foes of Israel’s very existence. But more important, both countries are extreme Islamists whose ultimate goal is to destroy the infidel.

               This is the situation as I have understood it to be. I have not however been able to determine a suitable deterrent to this type of movement being used in other countries. That is unless Israel is given the time to destroy Hezbollah at least in Lebanon and perhaps discourage the Islamists from using the same tactic in another country any time soon. It would not remove the threat of Hezbollah usurping the sovereignty of another country for it’s own use, but it would buy the world time to perhaps come to some peaceful understanding.

               Mr. Friedman suggest strongly that “The only way this war is going to come to some stable conclusion anytime soon is if The World of Order — and I don’t just mean “the West,” but countries like Russia, China, India, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia too — puts together an international force that can escort the Lebanese army to the Israeli border and remain on hand to protect it against Hezbollah.
    I am not talking about a U.N. peacekeeping force. I am talking about an international force, like the one that liberated Kosovo, with robust rules of engagement, heavy weapons and troops from countries like France, Russia, India and China that Iran and its proxies will not want to fight.
    Israel does not like international forces on its borders and worries they will not be effective. But it will be better than a war of attrition, and nothing would set back the forces of disorder in Lebanon more than The World of Order helping to extend the power of the democratically elected Lebanese government to its border with Israel

             This I also believe would stop the Islamist from moving on other countries in the same way. It will not get rid of Hezbollah or its’ backers Syria and Iran, but it will send the strong message that the other nations of the world recognize the situation for what it is and will not tolerate it happening again.

                 Mr. Friedman also made another very valid point and that is that the United States as a nation will not be successful in spear heading any such movement in this direction. As good as Condi Rice is and as well liked, she is still the representative of the hated George Bush government. He suggests, and I certainly see the brilliance of this idea, that the elder George Bush and Bill Clinton team be set this task. Both men are diplomates of the first order and both have some standing and friendly relationships in the world to call on. It just may work. At any rate, this assualt on an established world recognized definition of nationhood must be met by a world wide reponse to preserve the world order.

    Addendum: I was up early so turned on the news at 5am to get an update on situation.  Everyone is now speculating about an International force being sent in and indicating that Secretary Rice’s mission is to set this up.  I don’t think so for the reasons I give above, however I hope I am wrong and if so that she is successsful.  Time is really of the essence in this situation.  BB

    Addendum 2: France, germany and England have sent representatives to Israel ahead of Sec. rices’ visit to suggest a Nato Force be placed in Lebanon on Israel’s northern border.  Israel has indicated they would accept this arrangement.  What Israel does not want is a usless UN Peace Keeping Force.  In fact a UN Peace Keeping force has been on hand in this area for years with no effectiveness sowhy bother with a large one.  BB

    The following are some excerpts from an Israeli blog site to which I have subscribed (it’s free). I hesitated to offer it to my readers because it is of course the Israeli point of view. I try to give a fair and unbiased judgment to most human endeavors and therefore try to get as much information as I can before forming my views. Then at times as you have witnessed, I can be blunt in stating my opinion. So, I must admit that I am completely biased towards the Israeli cause. It didn’t happen over night or without due deliberation, but over a lifetime of seeing the events unfold.

    I was 7 years old in 1948 when Israel AND Palestine were formed into two separate states for two different people who both claimed one particular parcel of land. They both had equal claim to the land as it had been their home for thousands of years. And as Jews and Muslims cound not get along together so the world led by the British divided the land offering each a parcel. Palestine was given the greatest portion. In fact I believe it was something like 70 % of the land total. Israel was given a string of land parcels that looked much like a “string of sausages” as my elementary school Weekly Reader described it. (Can you believe I am remembering that and can see the picture in my mind after 57 years!) And at this point the vow of the Arab Muslims was to destroy Israel. As I grew up I learned more and more and eventually sided with the Israelis in their belief that they had a right to exist on the tiny parcel of real estate that they could call their won where all Jews were welcome and none would ever be made to suffer progroms or injustice again. So, much water has flowed as they say and my opinions and loyalties are firmly set. However, a great deal of information concerning Jewish relations with the world can be gotten here.                 I have read a number of articles the last week stating that the Israelis are over confident of their ability to win in any undertaking. You have heard me call them super-human as they have never to my knowledge lost a battle, let alone a war. I am not only firmly in the Israelis camp as far as believing the land of Canaan was given to them by a Higher Power, but believing in all justice they deserve a home of their own in this world that will hate the Jew forever and for no reason it seems.

               The Jewish people are a peaceful people. Even in early biblical times their god was a god of war they were not a war like people. Instead they trusted in their god to protect them for he was all powerful, the supreme god of all gods. (Later Yahweh became the one and only god thus leading to our current monotheistic beliefs.)

                The fact that they were a peaceful people was not to say that they weren’t fierce fighters for their land and their freedom. The early Jew’s believed so greatly in freedom that they were often willing to die instead of giving into slavery.

                 Then came the Diaspora where the Jews were forced out of Palestine and for almost 2000 years they wandered the Earth looking for a home and never finding it. They were hated, reviled and used badly everywhere they went. This cruelty towards an innocent peaceful people lead directly to Zionism (the movement to establish a home of their own).

                    In  Hezbollah they are up against a well armed force that is dug in deeply and among the civilians knowing the world will not tolerate the Jew taking too many civilian lives. Isn’t it strange that the world has no care at all when the Arab terrorist take Jewish lives. Neither does the world care that these same Arab terrorist hide behind and use the very people they say they are fighting to liberate. And once more, these people actually believe them and shelter them! Oh well.

               I am hearing in the current conflict being carried on in Lebanon that it was not a “proportional response.” The Israelis are blowing up a whole country because two soldiers were kidnapped. How forgetful can people be? What about all the suicide bombers coming across the border from Lebanon to blow up themselves, Israelis and buildings that has gone on for years? Israeli’s have done relatively nothing but talk for years while all these suicide bombings have been going on.? No, the kidnapping of the two soldiers after infiltrating Israeli land and killing 6 other soldiers was just the final straw.

           Israel has planned and executed this war against Hezbollah beautifully from a strategic point of view. They first had to cut the pipe line to Syria and Iran which meant unfortunately destroying Lebanon’s infrastructure. Now they can concentrate on hounding out and destroying the body of Hezbollah in Lebanon. They can not, and do not, claim to be destroying Hezbollah because even we in the United States have Hezbollah cells waiting for when they are given the word to attack the United States from within. ( the Palestinian and Lebanese protests in recent days here in the US brought these so-called sleeper cells to mind.) No, Israel just wants the Lebanese themselves to control their southern border and since they can not seem to eject the Hezbollah, and in fact are making no effort, then Israel in self defense is doing it for them. If they have the time, that is.

              The war has only gone on for one week but already the world is calling for peace talks and sending in an ineffectual blue helmeted UN Peace Force to stand and watch while more shelling of Israel from southern Lebanon is down by Hezbollah forces. When we went into Iraq no one began immediately calling for peace talks and a cease fire. And Iraq wasn’t lobbing rockets at us! They were simply refusing to cooperate with UN sanctions to disarm. And we have been there years trying to defeat the terrorist. So why is the world not willing to allow Israel time to rid itself of a nasty neighbor? It has got to be because they are Jews.

               For the first time in my memory of all the conflicts in which Israel has been engaged in an effort to simply exist, the world (at least as represented by the G8 Summit leaders) is condemning the Arabs as the aggressors. Somehow Israel has this time become the White knight battling to rid the world of the Arab terrorist. The position statement of the Big G8 meeting in Russia was clear in naming Hezbollah and Hamas as having started this fracas, and are insisting must be the ones to stop it.

                The members of the G8 Summit have called for Hamas and Hezbollah to return the kidnapped Israeli soldiers and stop the bombing of Israel.

                   You younger people may not realize this, but this is a major shift in the world leaders thinking! Israel has always and ever only had one ally: the United States. Other countries would either abstain from commenting and voting, or condemned Israel as being the culprit and aggressor.

               Equally telling in my opinion is the relative silence of the United Nations. Of course most of the Security Council’s important members are at the Summit, but still the UN has in the past been the first and foremost defender of the Arab’s position and calling on the aggressor Israelis to withdraw.  And, they still hold this position from the few  weak statements Secretary-General KoFi Annan made where he takes a love pat to the terrorists and then calls on Israel not to punish the civilian populations for actions of the terrorist.  He forgets that these innocent civilian populations elected these people into office and also tolerate them hiding behind civilians while they lob rockets into Israel.   

               Did I happen to mention that the Israelis have what appears to be an army made up of super-human beings when you read a history of their conflicts and achievements? ‘Tis true. Then when you realize that the majority of these ‘super humans’ are merely 18 – 20 year old kids doing their required time of active duty in the service you begin to wonder just how they have done the incredible things they have done. Why are these people such good soldiers? What kind of training do they get for this seeming invincibility when going up against what appears to be a superior army?

              It’s training that begins in the cradle. From their earliest years Israeli children know they are a nation hanging on to a meager piece of land that is all the world will ever allow them, and if they lose this patch then they as a people will be annihilated. So as soldiers and as citizen soldiers (all Israelis who are able are required to serve in the military) they know that losing is no option quite literally. It is win/life, lose/death for the Jew.

              It is also true that Israel has the second best weapons available in the world–ours. I say second best because our government is not supposed to sell our weapons to another country until we have either a newer version or an effective deterrent in place. Israel as our ally get these weapons first.

              Another first as far as I am aware is finally saying aloud that Syria and Iran are at the root of the problem as being the home base and main source of encouragement, supplies, money and arms for the terrorist groups Hezbollah and Hamas throughout the world. How the governments came to this startling observation that the rest of us who have watched the Middle East for years have known, is simply astonishing, mind-boggling, shocking even. Yes, I am being sarcastically facetious. Sorry. Well, actually I’m not sorry at all. Having practically grown up with the United Nations my contempt for that body has no bonds.

               There is a reason of course for the world not condemning Israel as the aggressor as they always have in the past. And it is not altruistic nor is it for honor and justice. No, nothing so noble from our pragmatic world leaders. The world is not condemning Israel in this instanced because they need Israel to do the dirty work of ridding the world of the threat of Nuclear War. For the first time Middle Eastern (meaning third world uncivilized, undeveloped) countries have, or have access to, nuclear weapons. These weapons are in the hands of ungovernable heads of state and a wildly emotional and fanatical populace.   All previous countries by the time they had nuclear weapons were at such a stage of development commercially that they no longer had the fanatic need to destroy what they didn’t have. They had become players on the world stage.

                In the case of the Middle Eastern countries the people, economies and beliefs are backward. If it weren’t for oil and the world’s addiction to this black fossil fuel most of the Middle East would be a forgotten waste land with a few romantic cities and places read about in history books and the Bible. In fact, it’s principle economy would probably be based on the tourism of pilgrims visiting the holy sites and taking pictures of the quaint burka covered women.

              But the Middle Eastern countries do have oil to make them important to the world, and they do, or may, have nuclear weapons making it necessary for someone to  remove this threat. The dirty and ignominious position of killing other people and thus garnering more of the fanatical hate of Muslim populations has fallen to the Jew. There is precedence for this allotting dirty jobs to the Jews in history. In Middle Ages Europe lending money was considered a filthy, ungodly activity. So, it became the only occupation allowed the Jew. They were not allowed to be merchants or butchers or hat makers except in their own little ghettoes. Any commerce with the non-Jewish population had to be as money lenders. Now the fact that commercial progress was dependent on borrowing money,  and therefore necessary, was beside the point. It was an ungodly thing and therefore allotted to the Jew.

              The Jew of course then became wealthy as a by product of this forced occupation. This wealth then became the Jews greatest burden.  They were shunned and hated by the populations as being money grioubers and cheats, needed by the merchants and busiinessmen and used by the kings.     Jewish wealth became a great source of revenue for kings who periodically called for a pogrom on Jews so that they could confiscate their property and precious metals . Hitler did this in the 1930’s when he used the excuse of ridding the world of an inferior race with his gas chambers, but he was actually just removing the ‘evidence’ while filling Germany’s coffers with Jewish wealth in order to wage war against the rest of Europe.

             So you see what is happening here from a view point of pragmatic history. Israel is fighting for it’s very existence as a people and the world is using the Jew to do something they themselves can not, or will not, do. Not a very pretty picture of mankind is it? Well, it never is. How can we possibly be God’s children?



    For those of you who find history books dull, tedious reading might I suggest Exodus, a novel of Israel by Leon Uris as a good book to get an understanding of Zionism and the Jewish hopes. Of equal value in getting a take on the Arab mind is his The Haj.   Leon Uris is one of the foremost fictional historians, i.e. he fleshes out history in his stories but stays as true to the factual happenings as is possible.   His novels, inculuding these two, have been featured on the History Channel for favorable review.

    A very interesting meeting was held in Cairo, Egypt Saturday (last night our time) that seems to have slipped thru the media blitz. The Foreign Ministers of 18 Arab countries held an emergency summit to discuss the Israeli response to Hezballah and it’s bombing and isolation of Lebanon. And for the first time in my memory these Arab countries are squabbling over the legitimacy of Hezballah’s attacks on Israel and the kidnapping of two of it’s soldiers. I have never known the Arab countries not to show a united front to the world in their condemnation of Israel. There have been rumors of some discord, but never has it been open.


              “The Saudi foreign minister appeared to be leading a camp of ministers criticizing the guerrilla group’s actions, calling them “unexpected, inappropriate and irresponsible acts.”

    “These acts will pull the whole region back to years ago, and we cannot simply accept them,” Saudi al-Faisal told his counterparts.

    Supporting his stance were representatives of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, The Palestinian Authority, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, delegates said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.”


              Saudi Arab is our two faced Ally ( see my blog on Saudi Test books) but in this instance they are taking an independent stand that won’t endear them to the opposing Arab states. Once more, they and those supporting them are also taking a different view than the rest of the world given the UN’s 10-1 vote against Israel yesterday. I haven’t yet been able to determine the reason for this maneuver, but I am sure it will be in the favor of Saudi Arabia. Not that it really matters since it is also working in Israel’s favor right now.


              “Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem lashed back al-Faisal, asking “How can we come here to discuss the burning situation in Lebanon while others are making statements criticizing the resistance?”

    Moallem emerged as the leader of another camp of ministers defending Hizbullah as carrying out “legitimate acts in line with international resolutions and the UN charter, as acts of resistance,” delegates said.

    The rift appeared likely to prevent participants from issuing a unanimous resolution over Israel’s bloody incursion into Lebanon – the worst Israeli attack on its neighbor in 24 years.”

               It seems our dissenting Arab brothers are divided and very worried about the situation and Israel”s ability to fulfill it’s mission and eliminate Hamas and Hezballah totally.

               “The groups, Islamic and secular, called on Arab governments to push for UN-sponsored negotiations to release Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners as well as the captured Israeli soldiers.

    In Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah was to meet Saturday afternoon with Ali Larijani, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, whose country is a top backer of Hamas and Hizbullah.

    The two would discuss “the situation after Israeli forces launched attacks on Lebanon, and search for way out,” a Saudi diplomat said on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the media”.


               Joe Guarino asked an important question in that he is concerned as to whether Israel has the means (arms) to fulfill this mission without the help of it’s only ally the United States. My answer was that Israel has never taken on a project yet that they have not been able to complete. Israel’s active duty soldiers and citizen soldiers who had served their time in the Israeli Army are the toughest in the world in my opinion. These people have had their backs against the wall for the 58 years of their existence as a country surrounded by hostile neighbors determined to eradicate them. And as indicated by the United Nation’s Security council’s consistent votes for the Palestinian cause and against Israel, they are faced also by a hostile world. This makes for a strong, independent people with the determination to survive and keep what is theirs by their birth right. Yes, Joe have no doubts Israel will do all that she sets out to do. No one ever knows what that may be until Israel itself retreats, and always in a position of dominance.

               My opinion on this particular mission is that they intend to go all the way and destroy Hezballah and then Hamas completely. Then put the fear of if not God then certainly the Israelis, in the population and leadership of Lebanon and Gaza so that they will not dare harbor terrorists in their countries. To do this the destruction in both countries must be bloody and great enough to succeed. No half measures will do. So look for more violence.

               As for the world, they will scream and pass resolutions but that will be all. We Americans have seen that we are the only nation willing to step up to the plate when something needs correcting in the world. Beside, Israel has never listen to any advice but their own. If they had they would have ceased to exist decades ago!

    After Lebanon and Gaza are subdued and secured I expect Israel to go in and do the world’s dirty work again by taking out Iran’s nuclear as well as conventional weaponry. This will effectively pull their fangs for another few decades of peace. Oil will go back down in price and mankind will go on polluting the atmosphere until we have reach the point of no return which Al Gore is telling us is ten years from now. And So We Go………..

              War-like rhetoric and activity in the Middle East has been ratcheting up very quickly this past week between Israel and the two terrorist groups they have been fighting.

              The first terrorist group is Hamas which is operating out of Gaza. For 40 years the Arab countries, Hamas and the Palestinian people have claimed the fighting was about the so-called “occupied territories’ and if Israel would just give them back then there could be peace. The Israeli’s I am sure knew better. Against all advice and cajoling by other countries and the United Nations they kept the territories as a buffer and a bargaining chip while building their country’s infrastructure, population and training all of their citizens to fight the next war.

              Last September Israel finally conceded and left Gaza completely in a last ditch effort to assure peaceful co-existence with their Palestinian neighbors. They left nothing to even show they had been there. The Palestinians had their own country finally to do with it as they wished. Did they build hospitals and schools and roads and bridges and a functioning government? No. within days of Israel’s withdrawal the Palestinians turned their first independent Palestinian country into a base from which to attack Israel. Then when their first elections were held they elected Hamas to head their new government.

               Israel has been striking back only in response to Hamas aggression all these months. But when a groups of Hamas invaded Israel and killed 8 soldiers and took one hostage it seems Israel’s patience ran out. They immediately began and invasion of Gaza with the immediate intent of rescuing their kidnapped soldier. Hamas was demanding that Israel release all Palestinian criminals from it’s prisons before they would return the soldier.

              Israel has never dealt with blackmailers or given into threats, and yet the Arabs continue to use these time worn and ineffective tactics. It truly is amazing how forgetful the Arabs can be. This abduction appears to have turned out to be the last affront that the Israelis were going to accept from Hamas and the Palestinians living in Gaza. The Israeli Army has attacked Gaza and it appears that they intend to take it back and this time eliminate Hamas.

               As stated above, Hamas is the freely elected government of the Palestinian state of Gaza. This free election of the terrorist as their lawful government should have told the world what the Palestinian people intended. It is true that the Palestinian Authority which had been in control for 40+ years was corrupt and ineffective and Hamas as a PR gambit provided the people with the few needed facilities and services that they had. But, the people knew Hamas had declared it’s intend to eliminate Israel and have not rescinded that pledge so what were they thinking when they put these people in charge of their first government? I guess that is obvious.

              On their northern border Israel has been harassed by Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist groups.

              Israel pulled out of Lebanon in 2000. The Lebanese Army was to guard the border and protect Israel’s flank. Of course this never happened because Hezbollah moved in and took over immediately and there was no real effort on the part of the Lebanese government to dislodge the terrorist and adhere to their portion of the agreement they had made with Israel. In fact, the people of Lebanon have elected members of Hezballah which now controls 12% of it’s governing body. This certainly gives us a strong indication of how the populace feels.

    After 6 years of rockets supplied by the other Arab countries being fired on northern Israel from southern Lebanon Hezbollah finally made the fatal mistake of making a raid into Israel where they killed 3 Israeli soldiers and kidnapped two others.  Then they fired a missile on Haifa. (Haifa is the largest Israeli city nearest Lebanon.) Israel was already engaged in Gaza so it is believed that there was either an agreement by Hamas and Hezbollah, or that the Hezbollah leadership did not believe Israel would fight a war on two fronts and would merely fire back until Hezbollah went into hiding until the next time. Such poor memories these people have! Israel fought and won several wars surrounded by enemies from the first day of it’s existence in 1948 to it’s final humiliating defeat of the combined armies of all the Arab governments in the 6 Day War of 1967. It was in this war that Israel captured the Sinai, Gaza, the West Bank and all of Jerusalem.

              The Israelis are now moving into and reoccupying Gaza, and at the same time bombing and destroying the infrastructure and airports of Lebanon as well as blockading the ports so as to isolate Lebanon from any contact with the outside world. They want to end the arms shipments that Hezbollah has been getting from other Arab countries, mainly Iran and Syria.

               Friday (Israel’s time)  Israel destroyed the home and office of the head of Hezbollah so today he, Hassan Nasrallah declared  “ You wanted open war. We are going to (wage) open war.” This also appears to be Israel’s intentions.  It is however a change in tactics for Hezbollah who have in the past chosen to hit and when Israel fires back they run to cover until the next time.   Will they stand and fight?  I seriously doubt it.  They are well aware of the fact that no Middle Eastern  country’s army would have a chance against Israel’s well trained army

              It is as if the past 60 years taught the Arabs and the world nothing. All the Arab countries are if not asiding then certainly cheering Hamas and Hezbollah. Muslims are parading thru the streets waving guns and flags. Beirut (Lebanon) asked the UN Security Council to put sanctions on Israel and on Thursday the members of the council tried to pass a strongly worded resolution condemning Israel for using “disproportionate force” when responding to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers. It failed only because Israel’s only ally, the United States, used it’s veto. The vote was 10 to 1 with Great Britain, Peru, Demark and Slovenia abstaining.

              Open war, all out war, what ever you want to call it I hope Israel makes an end to Hezbollah and Hamas once and for all. I hope they not only occupy but actually take over and govern lands that they win in battle. The only thing the Arabs understand is power. Any show of decency, humanity and fair and just treatment they interpret as weakness. The Israelis have the power and resolve and have never yet in their short history as a country failed when their backs were against the wall.

              The Palestinian Mandate was formed in 1922 by The League of Nations, the predecessor of the United Nations. Here is an excerpt from that document: “Whereas the Principal Allied Powers have also agreed that the Mandatory should be responsible for putting into effect the declaration originally made on November 2nd, 1917, by the Government of His Britannic Majesty, and adopted by the said Powers, in favor of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing should be done which might prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country; and

    Whereas recognition has thereby been given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country;……”

              When Israel was declared a free and independent country at 5 pm. May 15, 1948 the Jews vowed never again to be driven from the land bequeath to them by God. And I for one, have never doubted them.

                    I read another crying letter from a teacher today that due to the No Child Left Behind Program, and the testing, she is having to “teach to the test”. Given that the tests are formulated to evaluate the facts and functions that the average student should have mastered by any given grade level then I simply do not understand what these teacher’s concerns are.                         The students not being able to pass the test because they had not learned what they should have learned by the time they reach acertain grade in school is the problem. And to address this problem the No Child Left Behind Program was made into law. If teachers were not then teaching these basics could someone please tell me just what they were teaching? I mean people, if a child can not read, write and cipher as well as the average student his age then being able to draw a pretty picture, read sheet music and play a pretty tune or even speak another language is hardly going to get him a job in the real world. So it seems to me that forcing teachers to “teach to the tests” is exactly what has to be done in failing schools. In this way we are at least assured the child will have learned something of value.

                  This “teach to the tests” is another one of those empty slogan phrases that gets started but means nothing or something entirely different than the accepted definition of the words used, but everyone picks up on it and repeats it enough that no one challenges the sheer idiocy of the phrase. I did a blog here awhile back on the illogical and untrue slogan phrase: I’m on a “fixed income”. Everyone has accepted this nonsensical utterance as applying only to people on a pension, and more specifically  on Social Security. When we define the phrase strictly a “fixed income” means an income that is fixed at a certain amount and never changes. This hardly applies to Social Security where the recipients receive a cost of living increase in income every year. We could more correctly speak of teachers salaries that haven’t changed in years, or anyone else who hasn’t received a pay raise for some time as being on a fixed income. And these people are unfortunately found in the general working population not the retired population.

                     So now we have teachers complaining that they have to teach to the tests. Well, I certainly hope so!

    • Jul. 12, 2006 – Muslim Terrorist War on Infidels Continues

              Isn’t it ironic that the very same day I re-post an article about Muslim text books used in 25,000 schools around the world and containing inflammatory statements against Christians and Jews and all other religions that a Muslim terrorist bombing of trains in India should occur?

              A total of 8 bombs went off along one track in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) in a period of eleven minutes during the busy evening rush hour. It was a very well planned and organized attack on packed commuter trains and the death toll now stands at 200 with over 700 wounded. Mumbai is India’s largest financial center and the attack was meant to disrupt the country’s economy.

                No group has yet taken credit for the attacks, but India  whose population is mainly Hindu feels the perpetrators were Kashmiri Muslim terrorists and is charging Muslim Pakistan with aiding and abetting these groups. Pakistan claims that they only lend them diplomatic and moral support.

               The attacks caused countries all over the world to rush extra security to their train and subway centers. Grand Central Station has a huge ornate central lobby and then long not very well lit tunnels that lead to the subways. Security of this facility is almost impossible. But then that holds true for any area and this is the reason terrorism is so devastating. These thugs can go anywhere and bring in bombs and then be long gone before they go off. And a relatively small band of terrorist can hold a country with a large standing army at bay because they present no target. This will be the way of wars during this century and we had better somehow learn to fight these wars on the terrorist terms.

                One way of placing us on a more even playing field  is to cut their financial pipelines, which made the New York Times divulging important information on this topic so ruinous in our government’s fight against them. The civil liberties uproar over tapping overseas telephone communication is another hindrance to security.

                I too am concerned for and wish to defend my right to privacy. At the same time I know our weapons against these criminals are so limited, and if we are to protect ourselves we need to use underhanded secretive methods. It is a serious dilemma for Americans and the debate will continue I am sure. We will ultimately have to give up some of our liberties to allow the authorities more access to information that will allow them to thwart just such activities as this bombing of trains in India. The question is just how far will we be able to go and still remain a free people.   I personally have no real difficulties with tapping telephones. Nor do I particularly fear a take over of our government leading to a dictatorship. Our system of periodic elections precludes any group’s being in power long enough with sufficient numbers to accomplish a consolidation of power. Neither do I fear the government or anyone else learning too much about me. Probably because I know for a certainty that anyone can gain all the information they want on me any time they want. Give the average investigator a family’s trash can and he will be able to learn enough vital facts about the family to steal them blind. Thieves haven’t used this method extensively yet because apparently they don’t want to get their hands dirty. (One of my students remarked that it is only silly psychology students who can be induced to do things like this!)

                As for Muslims terrorists, this is their method of warfare and it has only begun. Their ultimate aim is to destroy all members of all faiths other than their own because until this is done the Great Imam will not return to bring paradise to Earth.
