Is This How a President Should Act? – Hit & Run : Reason Magazine.

Wow.  A great article on what presidential decorum  Obama would do well to follow.  But, there is no hope for Obama since he began running all over the world bad mouthing America and apologizing for us and of course bowing to Muslims.  This article is also a good history lesson.

I have to thank Spag ( Spagnola Report )  for sending me to this article.BB

Is This How a President Should Act?

| February 18, 2011

From the Washington Post:

The president’s political machine (Organizing for America) worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals.

Their efforts began to spread, as thousands of labor supporters turned out for a hearing in Columbus, Ohio, to protest a measure from Gov. John Kasich (R) that would cut collective-bargaining rights.

By the end of the day, Democratic Party officials were working to organize additional demonstrations in Ohio and Indiana, where an effort is underway to trim benefits for public workers. Some union activists predicted similar protests in Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. […]

The White House political operation, Organizing for America, got involved Monday, after Democratic National Committee Chairman Timothy M. Kaine, a former Virginia governor, spoke to union leaders in Madison, a party official said.

The group made phone calls, distributed messages via Twitter and Facebook, and sent e-mails to its state and national lists to try to build crowds for rallies Wednesday and Thursday, a party official said.

Just think–there once was a time (for more than a century, actually), when the president of the United States thought it too imperious to deliver the State of the Union via a speech to a joint session of Congress, since that would smack of telling a co-equal branch of government what to do. Now we have a president not just taking rhetorical sides in a state issue, but actively mobilizing his political organization to affect the outcome(s), even though (to my knowledge) nothing that Gov. Walker or any other belated statehouse cost-cutter is doing has a damned thing to do with federal law.

Actually, "Hosni Hitler" is not a bad band nameI have written in the past about how libertarians are pretty lonely in the political scheme of things in terms of constantly being challenged to defend themselves against the “logical conclusion” of their philosophy. But I think it’s time to amend that. We are witnessing the logical conclusion of the Democratic Party’s philosophy, and it is this: Your tax dollars exist to make public sector unions happy. When we run out of other people’s money to pay for those contracts and promises (most of which are negotiated outside of public view, often between union officials and the politicians that union officials helped elect), then we just need to raise taxes to cover a shortfall that is obviously Wall Street’s fault. Anyone who doesn’t agree is a bully, and might just bear an uncanny resemblance to Hitler.

The president’s heavy-handed involvement, along with House Republicans’ refusal to sign off on any new bailout of the states, means that this may very well be America’s biggest and most widespread political fight in 2011. It’s a cage match to determine first dibs on a shrinking pie. A clarifying moment.  (This statement is right on.  This is as I see it the most important moment in the fight to save our nation.  If Wisconsin fails then the nation is in dire straits. If Wisconsin Republicans and Gov. Walker hold then it might be what is needed to the other state governors who are facing this problem the needed support to get control of their state and local employees.

What ever happens in Wisconsin will also have a great deal to do with how the national government will handle the national debt. This is why it is so important to the Democrats and Obama that the Republicans and Gov. Walker do not get their legislation passed.  This is why they are sending in thugs from outside the state of Wisconsin to march and create chaos.  This people is war regardless of whether  anyone is ready to use that war.  This is a civil war and class warfare.  The unions are saying to simply tax the “rich”  and keep paying them their  outrageous salaries and benefits.  BB)

Another post and the comments from a great blogger.  Spag stays on top of what is happening and says little himself but makes people aware of so much that is happening behind the scenes.   Be sure and read the comments as these are intelligent people who are more than able to analyze any situation.

Several reporters have stated that they had heard that Obama and the Democratic National committee were gearing up to send in thugs but did not report because they did not believe it.  Well the union thugs are out in force in  the demonstration with the teachers in Madison, Wisconsin.  BB

Meddling In State Affairs

It is reported that the DNC has sent in the obamination’s attack dogs, can you only imagine the RNC doing that! The MSM would have it all over the place, JR at the News & Recordless would have had it in bold letters, front page, but you hear merely a peep out of the MSM! NADA! Beau

Indeed, there is a good correlation for using Hitler as a symbol in this fight as Obama is following in the footsteps of another well-known politician:

“As things stand today, the trade unions in my opinion cannot be dispensed with. On the contrary, they are among the most important institutions of the nation’s economic life. Their significance lies not only in the social and political field, but even more in the general field of national politics. A people whose broad masses, through a sound trade-union movement, obtain the satisfaction of their living requirements and at the same time an education, will be tremendously strengthened in its power of resistance in the struggle for existence.”

I thought that Obama called for a new era of civility? I guess not.

We now know that when teachers unions say “It’s for the children”, we know that they really mean “It’s for the union”. These are the people teaching our children? Makes a good case for charter schools and home-schooling.

By the way, when was the last time that a sitting president unleashed his political party campaign organizing apparatus against a state government and meddled in the conduct of its legit and legal financial business? I’m not sure that it has ever happened, at least in this country. Someone help me, if I am wrong.

I suppose this pretty much says it all:

In total, unions spent in excess of $400 million electing Barack Obama in 2008. If the Obama campaign wants to raise $1 billion for the 2012 campaign, they’re going to have to do everything they can to get unions on board.

So here’s the Wisconsin public sector union showdown in a nutshell: A newly-elected GOP governor is trying to rein in a special interest by enacting reforms that he explicitly campaigned on.

And the Obama administration is siding with the special interest.

Stormy, although I think Obama does have some socialist tendencies, I don’t believe he is a true socialist. I do believe that he is a unionist- which simply means he uses government to force the private sector to do its dirty work. That’s the union mentality, highly regulatory and coercive action.

Spag, you are much too charitable when it comes to Obama. I think that at a minimum he is a statist; the practice or doctrine of giving a centralized government control over economic planning and policy.

And, when you think about it, trade unions arose basically out of Marxist theory, in essence, the struggle of the economic classes. Trade unions are good as training grounds for the class struggle, and the Democrat Party is first and foremost about class struggles. You see it in their speeches and legislation all of the time. So, if Obama is a unionist at heart, he is in the range of Marxism and Lenonism Theory. He certainly cannot be confused as a capitalist or free market person.

Obama to call for $53B for high-speed rail – Yahoo! News.

Every time I think this man has hit the top rail in stupidity he one ups me.  Amtrack has been a white elephant from it’s beginning and we have bridges and tunnels all over our country  caving in and falling into rivers  not to mention a national debt that is about to bankrupt us and turn the United States into a banana republic so what does the wise one in the White House propose?  A $53 billion start up fund for high speed rail.

You can read the whole story if you want.  I just couldn’t stomach bringing it over to my web site.  BB

Big Nannies of the Year – Michelle Malkin – National Review Online.

When we have one too many government employees for getting the specified job done  they have nothing to do but push pencils and complain that their job responsibilities are too heavy and that they require an assistant.  This  continues and continues and continues until we now have our federal government made up of a million or more pencil pushers.  Requirements for any given job, especially at the top rank, is knowing the man who does the hiring or a person of higher rank than him.  Hell, you don’t even have to know how to say or spell the name of the  position you are going to fill someone will check the right box for you.  AND, you certainly needn’t concern yourself about the required functions of that position because they are unimportant as you have your own agenda.  This then is the nanny State.  The United States governments at all levels are crowded with these  creatures who know better what is best for the public than the public itself.  This article lists some really unbelievable Nannies,  the only thing is that the are real and they are functioning alive and well in real time for your and my benefit and good.  BB

Big Nannies of the Year
God save us from more busybody bipartisanship in 2011.

It was a nefarious year for nettlesome busybodies employed by the Nanny State. Here are the top power-grabbers of 2010 — those who just can’t leave us alone:

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg
Two feet of snow paralyzed trains, buses, snowplows, and emergency vehicles in the Big Apple this week. Perhaps if Bloomberg — the nation’s top self-appointed municipal food cop — spent more of his time on core government responsibilities instead of waging incessant war on taxpayers’ salt, soda, trans-fat, and sugar intakes, his battered bailiwick would have been better equipped to weather the storm.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
He proposed meddling mileage taxes, mused about a system to track drivers’ routes, lobbied for high-speed-rail boondoggles, and promoted a “livability initiative” to limit suburban growth and force suburb-dwellers into public transportation. Then America’s driving czar floated a plan to disable cell phones in automobiles. LaHood backed off that creepy crusade, but he is still intent on waging war against drivers who choose to use cell phones, entertainment systems, and GPS devices on the road. Just last week, the unstoppable control freak proposed a new rule banning truck and bus drivers from any use of cell phones while driving — including emergency calls on hands-free devices. His anti-car agenda is stuck in overdrive. The city of Cleveland (Cleveland by the way is one of those Rust Bel;t cities that is just about flat on it’s can with unemployment in double digits so naturally all the government can think to do is make it more difficult for the economy and their city to get up off of it knees.  BB)
The green police in this Midwestern metropolis made headlines in February with an intrusive plan to roll out snooping trash cans — “smart” rubbish bins bugged with electronic identification chips and bar codes to monitor residents’ recycling habits. Violators could be fined $100. Federal stimulus money has gone to fund a similar program in Dayton, Ohio. The technology originated in Germany, was adopted by eco-authoritarians in England (where at least 500,000 trash cans now have snitch chips embedded in them), and has spread across Europe. Welcome to the age of Bin Brother.

The city of San Francisco (Another  city now flat on its back and on life support in a state in the same morbid condition.  BB)
The board of supervisors recently took the “happy” out of McDonald’s Happy Meals by forbidding all restaurants to offer toys with children’s meals that exceed limits on calories, fat, salt, and sugar. Even the mayor of the People’s Republic of San Francisco opposes this latest food-control scheme. But the bossy City by the Bay continues to assault consumer freedom with bans on everything from plastic bags to pet sales to soda pop. This summer, Mayor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order banning Coke, Pepsi, and Fanta Orange drinks from vending machines on city property. The decree dictates that “ample choices” of water, “soy milk, rice milk, and other similar dairy or non-dairy milk” must instead be offered. (Have you ever tasted soy milk? YUCK! BB  ) It’s not clear how vendors will be able to circumvent the city’s hostility toward plastic bottles. Maybe beverages will be served straight out of those noxiously trendy reusable cloth bags?

The architects of Obamacare
After ramming a trillion-dollar package of unconstitutional federal health mandates down our throats, they said children and seniors would be saved, we could keep our doctors, costs would go down, and the economy would get a boost. Reality: Premiums have continued to skyrocket. Insurers nationwide have dropped child-only plans in the individual market. Obamacare taxes forced the AARP to raise its members’ rates. Hospitals have stepped up layoffs and shutdowns. And millions of Americans have been able to keep their doctors and coverage only because their employers, unions, or health-care providers begged the feds for special waivers. Heckuva job, health bureaucrats.

First lady Michelle Obama and former governor Mike Huckabee
Mrs. Obama first played the childhood-obesity card in September 2009, as a rationale for using her office to crusade for taxpayer subsidies for the Olympics bid of her hometown, Chicago. Her argument: Kids would stay fat, lazy, and uninspired if the Daley machine didn’t get its share of massive sports corporate welfare. Next came Mrs. O’s push for the $5 billion expansion of federal child-nutrition programs. As I first reported in February 2010, the legislation was a pet project of the Service Employees International Union, which seeks to swell the ranks of dawn-to-dusk year-round public-school food-service workers, who organize under the progressive activist slogan “serving justice and serving lunch.” In addition to school breakfasts and lunches, the kiddie-food patrol is now pushing subsidized dinners and summer food service to create a “stronger nutrition safety net.”

Nanny State Republican Mike Huckabee, who used his bully pulpit as Arkansas governor to campaign for Big Government–endorsed “healthier living” in public schools and private life, naturally sided with Mrs. Obama — and took a swipe at Sarah Palin last week for criticizing the White House’s usurpation of parental responsibility and rights. Huckabee scoffed at the idea that the feds are “trying to force the government’s desires on people.” But school bake sales are already under siege, and Mrs. Obama’s childhood-obesity task force has already called for new and dramatic controls on the marketing of unhealthy foods. Did Huckabee miss (or does he agree with) Mrs. Obama’s officious rallying cry on child nutrition: “We can’t just leave it up to parents”? God save us from more busybody bipartisanship in 2011.

I am third  generation in America  as my grandparents came from Russia in 1910 so I am very close to the immigrant problems and the problems of immigrants.  My grandparents however were legal immigrants and that makes all the difference.   I have said however that if I lived in a country as poor as Mexico and just by walking across a shallow river I could get a job making a decent living for my family then I damned well would.  That said I do think we need to get a handle on the problem and that MUST begin by closing our borders.  Second we must deal with the illegal immigrants who are already here in a reasonable way.  This is why I was hesitant to present this information emailed to me.  Then I remembered that I have promised to present the news I felt my readers should know  and we all as Americans should understand the cost to America of  continuing  as we have been with the problem on our borders which are getting much worse as Mexico falls into a more violent  country.  BB

I would like to add one more thing for which I am not going to add a reference because there are just too many references  from Andy Stern and SEIU Service Employees  International  Union videos.   This union accepts for membership anyone regardless of legality.  Remember this fact when you are watching the  big rally sponsored by these unions and communist and socialists organizations in Washington this Saturday.   SEIU’s head thug stated that they are sending 500 buss loads to the rally.  When asked if they all volunteered to go to the rally he stated that they “were required to go but they also wanted to go”.    Yeh, you bet.   So the upshot is that you will see a great many illegals at the rally who may or may not have wanted to attend.  All SEIU members who pay dues for the Head Thugs to use for politics and getting their socialists agenda thru.  BB

Todd Zywicki: In Elizabeth Warren We Trust? – WSJ.com.

Obama appointed a new czar right over the heads of our Congress  and this new czar is answerable only to Obama.  He has instructed the Treasury Department to do anything she wants. This Harvard Law School professor  has what amounts to complete control over our whole economy because she has control over the credit sector, all of the credit sector.  Once more Obama made her agency completely independent of any control by Congress by taking the funding of the agency out of the hands of Congress and allowing the funding to come directly from the Federal Reserve.  When she wants money she simply has more printed!

This lady is dangerous!

The following article is from an op-ed page but it gives us some understanding of just who Elizabeth Warren is and how she operates.  If she had been made to go thru the confirmation process mush would have come out and it is doubtful that even the Democrats would have confirmed her.  Obama knew this and that is why he  waited for A recess by Congress  to slip her in undercover.

This week Congress has put in place measures that would make it unlawful for the President to make any appointments with out the approval of Congress.  The  so-and-so’s on The Hill are finally catching on to the fact that even they are  now superfluous!   Obama doesn’t listen to the people, he  doesn’t listen to Congress, he only listens to the Communists and Socialist, union leader thugs and criminals that he has allowed to infiltrate the West Wing.  BB

In Elizabeth Warren We Trust?

The unaccountable head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has repeatedly used shoddy data to push policies she favors.

By TODD ZYWICKI

The Obama administration has promised that the Federal Reserve’s new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will be independent from politics, a model of regulatory expertise grounded in sound data and economics. Naming Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Warren as de facto agency head undermines both goals.

By appointing another White House czar to avoid Senate confirmation, the administration politicized the powerful new bureaucracy from its birth. And by appointing an individual with a track record of using questionable research to advance policy ends, it has jeopardized the second goal as well.

Consider Ms. Warren’s much-ballyhooed study on the alleged link among health problems, medical expenses and personal bankruptcy filings. Published in the February 2005 issue of Health Affairs, the report was timed to head off bipartisan bankruptcy legislation that was enacted later that year. Ms. Warren and her co-authors claimed that “at least” 46% of personal bankruptcy filings in 2001 (the year from they collected the data) were the result of “medical causes,” and that this represented a 23-fold increase over 20 years.

Associated PressElizabeth Warren is announced as the head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Sept. 17.

zywicki

zywicki

Both conclusions are extremely suspect. First, the study provided an implausibly broad definition of “medical bankruptcy”—including any filer who reported uncontrolled gambling, drug or alcohol addiction, or the birth or adoption of a child.

Equally dubious, the authors classified a bankruptcy as having a “major medical cause” if the individual had accumulated more than $1,000 in out-of-pocket medical expenses (uncovered by insurance) over the course of two years prior to filing—regardless of income, and even if the debtor did not cite illness or injury among the reasons for bankruptcy.

In 2001, average per capita out-of-pocket medical expenses were $683. During the two-year period Ms. Warren and her co-authors studied, in other words, Americans spent an average of $1,366 on uninsured medical expenses, or 30% more than their threshold definition of a “major medical cause.” There was no larger context for their threshold figure: A debtor with $1,001 in uncovered medical expenses and $50,000 on a Saks card would constitute a “medical bankruptcy” in their study.

The claim of a 23-fold increase in medical bankruptcies was based on a comparison of their 2001 data with Ms. Warren’s research in a 1981 study—which appears to count only those who self-reported as having filed bankruptcy for medical reasons. This is a completely different and much narrower definition of “medical bankruptcy” than the one she used 20 years later, and obviously inflates the increase.

In contrast to Ms. Warren’s studies, a battery of analysis, including research done by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office of the United States Trustee (which oversees the administration of bankruptcy cases), and by Daniel Dranove and Michael Millenson of Northwestern University, concluded that fewer than 20% of bankruptcies are caused by health problems or medical expenses.

Last year Ms. Warren and her co-authors were back with an even more dramatic study, in the American Journal of Medicine, timed to promote President Obama’s health-care reform law. Drawing on 2007 filings, the authors concluded that 62% of bankruptcy filings were the result of medical issues and that the odds that a bankruptcy had a medical cause had doubled between just 2001 and 2007. This study was also flawed.

After Congress made it harder for people to skip out on their debts in 2005, the number of bankruptcy filings plummeted. In 2001, the year Ms. Warren used for the first study, there were 1,452,030 personal bankruptcy filings; in 2007 there were 822,590. Even if we are to accept the methodologies of the two studies for the sake of argument, there were 670,838 “medical bankruptcies” in 2001 and 510,828 medical bankruptcies in 2007—a drop of 160,000 per year. Yet Ms. Warren’s article nowhere acknowledges that the absolute number of bankruptcies and purported medical bankruptcies declined.

Concerns about Ms. Warren’s presentation and interpretation of data have been longstanding. As I wrote in these pages in August 2007, her book “The Two-Income Trap” willfully ignores the obvious in her own data: that spiraling taxes—and not living expenses—were a major cause of middle class financial woes.

Similarly, reports of the Congressional Oversight Panel of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP)—a panel of which she was chair—uniformly treated home foreclosures as the result of bank fraud and the bullying of helpless homeowners. Fraud and bullying there was, but her panel consistently ignored the many foreclosures that have resulted from a homeowner’s strategic decision to walk away from a house whose value has fallen below the amount still owed on the mortgage. Economists and housing analysts widely agree that a substantial number of defaults occur for this reason. That reality is largely absent from the TARP panel’s reports.

(Gee this sounds a whole lot like how they determined the  Global Warming thing, doesn’t it?    Just grab some figures out of the air that fit what you want the report to verify.  Good work for a Harvard prof! BB)

The head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is one of the most powerful bureaucratic positions ever created in the American political system. It can regulate or ban almost every consumer credit product in the country, yet it is beyond Congress’s power of the purse because its budget is guaranteed as a percentage of the Fed’s annual revenues. Under normal circumstances, the Senate would have the opportunity to ask Ms. Warren to explain the way in which she has sometimes interpreted data in her research before entrusting her with control of the agency.

By doing an end-run around the confirmation process, the Obama administration has eliminated our opportunity to find out. And by installing the head of the agency as an assistant to the president inside the White House, it has insulated her from meaningful congressional oversight.

Mr. Zywicki teaches bankruptcy and contracts at the George Mason University School of Law, and is the co-editor of the University of Chicago’s Supreme Court Economic Review.

As usual Heritage Foundation lays it all out very well.  Obama’s speech, if you really listened, was very revealing.  Have we patriots time to turn things around?  I pray so.  BB

The Obama Doctrine

Aside from the wooden performance, there was nothing particularly noteworthy about President Barack Obama’s Oval Office address on Iraq last night. The President again evinced the impression that he viewed Iraq as a distraction, and he twice said he wanted to “turn the page” to other issues. As forgettable as the address was however, once placed into the broader context of foreign policy speeches and actions, a clear Obama Doctrine can now be defined, as James Carafano and Kim Holmes do in a new paper released today.

Downplaying American Sovereignty: The Administration is pursuing an ambitious agenda on international treaties. An incomplete list includes: the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with Russia; the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT); the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOST); the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); and the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS). The ideals behind many of these treaties are admirable. But in every case the onus is on the Administration to ensure that the treaty does not compromise America’s security or the rights and freedoms established in the U.S. Constitution. International institutions work best when they manage affairs between nations; they falter and become harmful when they reach into the domestic affairs of nations.

But that is exactly what the Obama administration has been doing. Just last week the White House submitted its  “Report of the United States of America” to the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC), a body that includes such human rights exemplars as Cuba, Russia and Saudi Arabia. In the report, the Obama administration attacks Arizona’s recent immigration enforcement law and portrays its law suit against it as a defense of human rights. Is there a better example of what little interest this Administration has in upholding American sovereignty? There is no universal right to violate a country’s immigration laws with impunity. It is no violation of human rights to enforce border security and basic immigration requirements. When the Obama administration engages international institutions, it appears that E Pluribus Unum gets thrown under the bus.

Soft-Pedaling American Power: The belief that the United States over-utilized hard power in Iraq and Afghanistan has shaken President Obama’s confidence in the application of hard power at all. Instead, the President intends to use soft power so as to appear more equal at the negotiating table. Shortly after taking office in January 2009, President Barack Obama said “[if] countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us.” And how has this soft-power approach fared? French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently said: “We live in the real world, not a virtual one… President Obama himself has said that he dreams of a world without nuclear weapons. Before our very eyes, two countries are doing exactly the opposite at this very moment… I support America’s ‘extended hand.’ But what have these proposals for dialogue produced for the international community? Nothing but more enriched uranium and more centrifuges.”

The reality is that soft power only works as an adjunct to hard power. Saddam Hussein’s removal from power eliminated any possibility of a major threat from Iraq for the foreseeable future. And while Afghanistan remains an open question, only the anti-war left believes the Taliban can be persuaded to lay down their arms with promises of aid and diplomacy. Any time an American leader believes soft power is a substitute for hard power, he is bound to fail.

A More Restrained America: President Obama has made no secret of his ambivalence toward American military power. At his nuclear summit in Washington, he said: “Whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower.” The President’s take-it-or-leave-it attitude toward America’s defenses has been reflected in his spending priorities. He cut funding for the F-22 fighter jet and key missile defense programs. His defense procurement budget is anemic, he has refused to modernize our nuclear deterrent, and his Administration even proposed terminating the development of the next generation Navy Cruiser with missile defense capabilities. The force structure Obama is projecting simply cannot sustain existing U.S. security commitments. Military power is not only about fighting wars; it is also about others’ perception of whether you have the means and will to defeat aggression. The perception of American weakness is a destabilizing force throughout the world.

A More Humble America: Since his first month in office, President Obama has embarked on a whirlwind Apology Tour casting himself as the redemptive vessel for the entirety of America’s past sins. Apologizing for things that happened in the past may gain popularity abroad, but so far, it has done little to change minds about our policies. If anything, it has portrayed a weaker United States not only to our allies, but to adversaries striving to gain any advantage over us. The repercussions could be grave—and here, history also provides an example. Not long after President Jimmy Carter apologized for America’s supposedly excessive fear of Communism, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and the hard-liners revolted in Iran, taking Americans hostage.

Carter is not the only past president whom Obama is emulating on foreign policy. President Obama’s true foreign policy predecessor is President Woodrow Wilson, who also sought a more “ethical” foreign policy and sought to rely on a “concert of nations” to keep the peace. Wilson’s idealistic approach failed to stem the tide of World War I and helped to foster the isolationism of the 1920s and 1930s that inadvertently eased the road into World War II.

There is a better foreign policy vision. It is a vision that is grounded in George Washington’s first State of the Union address reminder that: “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” It’s a vision that is consistent with the Monroe Doctrine ideal that America is committed to the principles on which republican self-government is based. It’s a vision that embodies the Truman Doctrine’s support for peoples threatened with Communist aggression. And it’s a vision that continues the Reagan Doctrine’s “peace through strength” strategy of revitalizing the U.S. military while promoting economic growth at home and increasing support for oppressed people around the world. What all these lines of thought have in common is that America is an indispensable nation in the defense of liberty around the world.

The Obama Doctrine points us in the opposite direction. It will force friendly nations to look elsewhere, not to Washington, for arrangements that bring them greater security. And that will make this a far more dangerous world indeed.
